Anyone expressed BEFORE baby arrived?

I was told to try expressing what I could and freeze the colostrum I get out in an icecube tray.

And after todays events the expressing and stimulation make move things into true labour for me.. and I aint allowed to leave the house.. so I am well bored! lol

What dya reckon? anyone ever tried this?

new expressing pump currently being sterisiled as we speak!

Never tried this hun i didnt know you could express before having the baby cause i thought they should get the colostrum on there first visit too the breast after they are born! so if you do express will you bottle feed LO with that when he is born? xx

ooh good question! I don't know!

If you try it and it works let us know and I'll get my pump in the sterilizer before you can say 'boobies'!!!!

I don't really know much about this at all, but didn't want to read and run. I'd suggest maybe asking your Midwife if you can? The Colostrum is important to the baby so it might not be a good idea to express it now.

Well you can certainly use a breast pump in early labour to help speed things up so I don't see why not, but don't expect to get much out - colostrum is much harder to express than milk.

As for feeding, don't worry - you will continue to make more colostrum to replace what is expressed right up until your milk comes in, so you can still put baby to the breast!

a tablespoon is a LOT in colostrum terms though... when baby's tummy can only hold 5-7ml when it's first born, that's 3 feeds!

but you only need a teaspoonful at a time! could you freeze it in those portions? I would be if I had a breast pump, but am probably going to hire a medical grade one (expect to have supply issues) and will only do that when I have a better idea of when I'll need it (have no faith in baby coming in the next 3 days!)
