Epidural, Yes or No?

Hey girls, I myself am a big baby when it comes to pain, and cannot handle pain for the life of me! I have been doing alot of reading lately and it seems to me that having an epidural would be the best route to go for labor and birth because of the whole pain issue, but am not sure. Was wondering if anyone else out there has had an epidural and your opinions on it and if I should get one? What do you think!! Thanks!

I would see if you can handle it, if not then take the epi. Thats basically what happened with me. I lasted 18 hours into my labor before deciding to get one, had the urge to push and I wasen't fully dialated so they had to give it to me. Make sure its not during a contraction!. They did mine in mid contraction. Omg that hurt

Had a full one with my first and it was excellent at removing any and all pain during childbirth. But I was required to remain in bed (with catheter and IV) until I could feel my legs again and two hours had passed.

That was not fun. I had some remedial headaches from it but nothing else.

I personally didn't care for it too much, I am going to have this one without one. But I feel I can tolerate pain. I'm going to be using the whirlpool for pain managment with this one as well as other positioning, walking etc.

I guess they have a walking epidural now and might be ok with that since it doesn't require such immobility.

Either way, it rocked for pain managment, but I didn't care for it because I was immobile for far too long after I had my DD.

I know I'm getting one, this is my first child so I don't know how much about them but I do know my aunt didn't get hers until way to late because she couldn't pay for it but then my grandmother ordered the doc. to give it to her because she was screaming in pain so bad she was scaring all the other people in the hospital. I felt really bad for her.
I just don't like the idea of that long needle and the catheter part, I have had a catheter before and those hurt real bad..... for me anyways, but maybe they will do that after I cant feel anything.

hi there katie anne, I work as a nurse, and would definitely advise you to go for the epidural if the pain is too bad. You hear all kinds of horror stories about epidurals, rubbish about the spinal cord etc, and the vast majority of this is absolutely false. If you get a good anaesthesiologist who knows what he is doing then the pain relief benefits are limitless!! dont listen to the stories of your friends aunts cousin twice removed who now has problems, for the vast majority the epidural is a safe and very effective pain tool.
