Inductions

Im now over due so the prospect of having and induction is becoming a bit more of a reality, but some peole have said to me "Oo, DON't have an induction!"
Can anyone tell me why they would say this? Does it make labour worse? xx

Pain is usually stronger, takes longer and there is a higher risk in having to have a c-section, or forceps or vacum.

it can cause problems, but not always

i was induced was in active labour for just 6 hours and only used gas and air so induction certainly doesnt equal 'nightmare labour'

each labour is individual, however it happens

You don't have to have one if you don't want to - they might put it into language that suggests you do, but it is your choice. AIMS website has some good info on this, if you want to find out about it before making a choice.

If just the prostin gel sets you off, labour should then progress naturally and would be the same as a normal labour.

I have to be induced early - so I've discussed induction a lot with my consultant. Basically, you need contiuous monitoring, so you can't be as active (although you probably can stay upright), and the drip makes the contractions much more intence and closer together, so you can find it more painful. I t can also take longer. They are more likely to offer an epidural with an induced labour.

There is a higher risk of needing assisted delivery or c-section.

Remember there are also risks associated with baby staying in the womb too long - for example placenta could stop working as efficiently - which is why they do induce. At the end of the day it's your decision - but sometimes it is safer to deliver baby even if it's a bit more painful for mum. x
