VBAC. Anyone had one?

Hi everyone, I'm 36+1 with my second bablet and hoping for a VBAC. (Vaginal Birth after Cesaerean(sp?))

I had to have an emergency c-section on my first for 'failure to progress.'
I was taken into hospital to be induced when I was 2 weeks overdue and after 5 days of contractions, I wasnt dilating at all. They broke my waters but still nothing so they gave me a section.

I was devastated. Before I had the epidural I was leaking colostrum (sorry if TMI!) but when I FINALLY got to hold and cuddle Lily and try to nurse (which took FOREVER ) , we realised that the flow had just stopped. Still dont know why. My colostrum didnt start for 3 days and by then I'd started giving formula because I was afraid Lily was starving. Needless to say, breastfeeding was a massive failure after that and I've never really forgiven myself for it.

I am absolutely teriffied of having to go through this palaver again. I so want a vaginal delivery and I want to breastfeed. Has anyone on here managed a successful VBAC? What do you think the likelihood is of me going into labour on my own? Any info and advice would be really greatly appreciated.

Thanks guys, hope you're all well today

AmyBumble (lmao - thats what i meant to type for my name not Buble )

Hey

I had a sucessful vbac. I had to be induced after being 2 weeks overdue with my first which ended in an emergency c-section. She was 7lb 14oz

The 2nd I went into spontaneous labour a week or so early and after the first real contractions he was delivered in 3 1/2 hours with no tearing. He was 7lb 9oz so not big, or particularly small.

It is possible providing you have the support of your consultant & midwife. I am going for my 2nd vbac. In fact I am going for a waterbirth... so watch this space.

Hiyas hon,

I also had a sucsessfull VBAC with my 2nd LO. I had to have an emergency c-section with Lauren due to pre-eclampsia and understand how hard it must have been for you 1st time around.

When I fell with Victoria I was put on high risk and had to have regular appointments with a consultant, but they were both more than happy that I try for a natural birth second time around. I sailed through my pregnancy and went into spontanious labour 2 days before due date. Everything went fine and I gave birth naturally, although I had to be wired up the whole time I was in hospital to monitor babys heart and movement which meant I couldn't have the 'active' birth I wanted. Even so it was still the most amazing thing to be able to give birth to my little girl, and I breastfed her within 20mins of her being born.

I think as long as you have the support of your midwife / consultant you stand a good chance. The only thing I woud advise is to have an open mind. Go for your VBAC but also prepare for if you did have to have another c-section. Try to think about how you would like it to be different to make it a better experience rather than all the negatives of the first time around.

Fingers crossed Im going for my second VBAC aswell. I still have to be admitted due to lood pressure, but midwife has told me they use portable monitors now which means I'll be able to get off the bed this time!!

Hope it all goes well for you

Ducky, have you thought about switching OBs? I switched for a VBAC. I'm hoping and praying for a VBAC this time. My last ob told me that my daughter would be "well over 10lbs" and I wouldn't be able to deliver her. She basically told me my daughter would end up with neurological damage (all of this to a first time mom!), so I agreed to a C-section. My daughter was born at 8lb10. She refuses to do VBAC's because she "doesn't have time in her practice for that". So I switched. I'm hoping but my new ob office has 3 obs who could deliver. The first one I met was fantastic! Very supportive of a VBAC. The one I met last time seemed like, I'll go along with a VBAC, even if I think a C-section would be easier. Oh, but they also now use the portable monitors, so they continuously monitor, but I can move around, and even shower!
I really hope that you get to have a VBAC this time, I'd love to read your birth story after your LO is born. Good luck!

I'm planning on a home VBAC after an emergency section for failure to progress (Kaya was totally stuck!). I have chosen to have a home birth as I don't think that I would be able to achieve my VBAC in hospital - they have loads of policies that I would have to argue with to not have such as continuous monitoring, dilating 1cm an hour etc. I just think that the stress would inhibit me.

It's important to realise that a VBAC is not as dangerous as many consultants make out - the risk of rupture in a woman that has had a section is 0.5%, in a woman that has never had a section the risk is 0.3%, that's an increase in risk of only 0.2%. It is important to not let them induce you though as your rupture risk does go up when being induced.

Hi, I had 3 nvd's followed by 2x emergency c/sections. This time I am trying for a vba2c but like marley says hospital has put restrictions on it, none that I am unhappy with I have to say (no inductions, no assisted delivery, constant fetal monitoring) I would love a home birth but having had 2 emergencies and having my first c/s baby ending up in scbu and the second being born with an apgar of 2, I am not brave enough!!
I have prepared myself for the possibility of another section and worked through the "issues" from the first 2, so hopefully I will be able to enjoy the birth this time no matter how it comes!!
Bear in mind the rupture statistics often also include the more benign scar separations which have no consequence and do not need surgery. You are more likely to need a repeat c/s for another reason (other than rupture) in fact I think I read you are 30 times more likely to need a section for another reason than you are from rupture.
Also remember that OB's are specialists in birth problems and are kinda looking out for them!!

wow Marley I didnt realise you could have a home VBAC?

I would love to give this a go, I think the hospital environment and the complete uselessness of the staff there contributed massively to my stress and eventual c section. Do you think I would be able to give this a go? considering Im already 36 weeks lol but am not booked in for any sweeps or anything at this moment.

Thanks everybody for all your info and advice, I have to say its so nice to know you're not the only one.

What I would say is to do loads of research ASAP. Look on www.homebirth.org.uk for loads of info and links about H-VBAC. Write a letter to your head of MWs stating that is what you WILL be having. 36 weeks is not too late but you will need to get your skates on. There's a yahoo group for VBAC women, many of whom are having/had a home birth its called ukvbachbac, they'll have loads of advice and I'm pretty sure that they have templates for writing to the head of MWs stating your intentions.
