Any advice on working with kids and possible swine flu?

There are children that have been given tamiflu for suspected swine flu where I work and now I am in a complete state and don't know what to do about going in to work.

I cant seem to find any information or guidence.

Help!

Hi... first of all, calm down... swine flu is somewhat hyped up and it is just another flu virus. More people die each year from normal flu... Are there children who you directly work with having to take tamiflu?

I work for the NHS in a professional capacity and you might find this info reassuring...

Does swine flu pose special risks in pregnant women?
During pregnancy, you may have an increased risk of complications from any type of flu, especially in the second and third trimester.

Can I take antiviral drugs if I am pregnant?
Yes, on the advice of a doctor. The Department of Health has purchased Relenza, an inhaled antiviral drug that treats flu without reaching the developing fetus.

An expert group reviewed the risk of antiviral treatment in pregnancy, which is extremely small - much smaller than the risk posed by the symptoms of swine flu.

Will pregnant women get preference for a swine flu vaccine?
It will be months before a swine flu vaccine becomes available. When it is available, there will be guidelines on which groups of people are a greater priority for vaccination.

BASICALLY, I would say that you should ask your doctor about a course of Relnza if you are very concerned; howeevr, you may wish to just take the necessary precaustions, keep a small antibacterial gel on you, and if you notice any symptoms (sore throat, sniffly nose) then visit your GP. xx

Also your work should have very easy access for all parents and workers to sanitizing gel. Parents must use the sanitizing gel befor ethey come in, at my work. The rest of the children are encourage to wash their hands.

Hi and thanks!

I think the children on the antiviral drugs are asked to stay at home while they complete the course, its the ones that dont know they have got it that concerns me more.
Yes we do use the gel etc but its so hard to get them all to be clean. You know kids

I think I have got myself in a state over this because I have had a bit of a tricky time recently and just can't stand the thought of it getting worse. Need to chill out big time

my brother and sister have had a case at their school was going to avoid them but TBH as long as I wash my hands and be careful there is no risk

at 10weeks pregnant I suffered from winter flu. I made it but had to sit it out and couldn't have any anti viral drugs it was hell

We have a confirmed case at our school and even pregnant women are still advised to stay at work because you can just as easily get it from the wider community anyway.

I am not at work though as I have what NHS direct think is an upper respiratory tract infection. So, if you're already ill, stay away, but otherwise just keep washing your hands a lot.
