Been taking them for about a week or so now and ive just been hit with the worst constipation ive ever had. Does anyone esle take these tablets and if so, what can i do to get things 'moving' again? i feel like crap (just cant take one!)

Also, is straining real hard bad for for bubs? Sorry for tmi but when i was, i started to get a few cramps too xxx Thanks in advance ladies xxx

I'm currently taking iron tablets twice a day for last 3 weeks, but have not suffered from any constipation. Sorry can't be of any help to you.

I took these tablets early on in pregnancy and was very constipated too. I can't remember what I did to get me going to the toilet, just normal stuff like eating grapes etc.

I've been suffering from constipation again too. I find Fybogel helps and the midwife says we can ask her to prescribe lactulose if we feel we need it. I don't think straining is bad for the baby but it can contribute to getting piles so best to try and keep things soft and regular.

Get a different brand. Iron tablets are not all the same, there are different chemical compounds that can be used so there will be one out there that is suitable for you.

lets see, pregnacare is Ferrous fumarate so you could try Ferrous sulphate http://www.chemistdirect.co.uk/ferro...g_1_26297.html

or Ferric pyrophosphate (but I can't find a brand online).

Anyway, speak to your mw, gp or pharmacists about an alternative. The last resort is a liquid called sytron that they give to babies. It is yuck but very delicate on your tummy.

In the meantime, sweetcorn or beetroot gets me moving when I need it (not that often luckily).
