If you go in for an induction the doctor will usually use a prostoglandin cream/gel on your cervix when you enter the hospital to get your cervix ready to efface and dialate. Prior to starting you on pitocin or another induction drug.
They used it on me with DD to get things rolling... put it on my cervix at 7:30pm and by 3:30am my waters had broken.
Semen has natural prostoglandins in it, so logically it could encourage an unripe cervix to 'get ripe'.
I imagine prostoglandin has a very different effect with a lot of women. Some may be more sensitive to it than others. Here's hoping that my first baby offers an indication that I am sensitive to it, so if it looks like I'm heading for overdue, I can encourage DH to deposit some prostoglandins for me to get things rolling.
