Birth Plan

I know its not set in stone but this is my ideal birth plan, do you think its a bit erm much, like to detailed?

Shireena Claris Marie Bennett
Birth Plan
Due Date: 13th April 09
Scheduled to deliver at Sandwell Hospital

If There Are No Complications I Would Like My Labour To Go As Follows:
I would appreciate having the environment to be as relaxed and quiet as possible through out labour and delivery.
Labour

a) I would like to video record and take photographs during labour and the birth.
b) My support people/coaches are Hakiem, Lavinne and Dawn (alternate) and I would like them to be present during labour and delivery.
c) I don’t mind students in the room during labour and delivery however I would prefer not to be examined by one.
d) I Would like if vagina examinations could be kept to a minimum
e) For pain relief I would like to use gas and air and if available the birthing pool.
f) I would prefer to try ALL other methods before being offered the epidural.
g) I wish to be able to move about as freely as possible during labour.
h) I would like to eat as much as I want during labour.
i) Unless there is signs of my baby in pain I would prefer if my waters (if not already broken) break naturally.
j) If not necessary I would prefer that the baby’s heart beat was only monitored when needed to be.

Delivery

a) I would like to be allowed to choose the position in which I give birth, including squatting.
b) I would like my supports, or nurses to support me and my legs as necessary during the pushing stage.
c) If needed I will accept help with either ventuse or forceps to deliver my baby.
d) I would prefer not to have an episiotomy unless absolutely required for the baby's safety, or if help is required.
e) I am hoping to protect the perineum and have minimal tearing so I would like guidance in when to push and when to stop pushing so the perineum can stretch.
f) Even if I am fully dilated, and assuming the baby is not in distress, I would like to try to wait until I feel the urge to push before beginning the pushing phase, to avoid tearing.
g) If I Do tear I would like a local anaesthetic to repair a tear or an episiotomy.
h) I don’t mind being administrated the injection to help speed up delivery of the placenta.

Immediately After Delivery

a) I would like to have one of my coaches cut the baby’s cord.
b) I would like to try and establish breastfeeding immediately after birth.
c) I would like either me or one of my coaches to hold the baby during the third stage of labour.
d) I would like the baby evaluated and bathed in either my own or my coaches’ presence.
e) I would prefer to hold the baby rather than have her placed under heat lamps.

In case of emergency

a) Unless I or my baby are at risk of dying I would like to avoid a caesarean.
b) If my main midwife determines that a caesarean is absolute necessary I would like to get a second opinion if there is time.
c) I would like one of my coaches with me at all times if a caesarean is required.
d) If Possible, so I can view the birth, I would like the screen lowered just before delivery of the baby.
e) If the baby is not in distress, the baby should be given to one of my supports immediately after birth.

Recovery

1) Unless required for health reasons, I do not wish to be separated from my baby.
2) I would like to have the baby "room in" and be with me at all times unless in an emergency.
3) I would like to be discharged from hospital as soon as possible

is there anything missing? lol
thanks in advance

That's a lot of detail! Not neccissarily a bad thing - just try not to be upset if it doesn't go how you wanted it to. I'm winging it, so to speak. If I haven't got a plan, nothing can technically go against the plan and I therefore can't be disappointed..

it makes sense in my head.

Looks good. Couple of things you may want to think about...

What type of monitoring do you want during labor and the pushing stages?

What do you want done to the baby i.e. Vitamin K injection, Hepatitis B immunization, eye antibiotics, etc.?

What do feel about labor augmentation methods - artificially breaking waters, pitocin and such?

Do you want the cord cut immediately or wait for it to stop pulsating?

Seems like you've thought of everything, I think I'd be in the same boat as Captain Ally though, try not to be too upset if everything doesn't go according to plan. I don't have a written birth plan myself, I just know I would prefer to not have an epidural if possible etc but in general I'm hoping to take it as it comes xxx
