With my son I didn't have a white mucus plug but I did have a very red period like plug when my contractions first started. That was like a heavy period (which scared me no end being my first baby!) It lasted about three hours lightening up as time went on then five hours later I was in hospital 5 cm dillated..

Shining Star, I had near enough the same experience as you. I had a red mucus plug at about 9.00 pm and about 10 minutes later started getting quite strong contractions. Each time the contractions started to get worse, I had more red 'show.' Quite a suprise - when I went into the hospital at about 2.00 am, I was 4 cm dilated. I continued to get more show every time I dilated further.
