Did we all have tests for STDs and would it pick up herpes?

HI Girls!

Like most of you, I've read thje horrific story about the poor lady who's baby died as a result of Herpes (cold sores) type 1 infection.

What I'm wondering is:

In the string of routine bloods taken, were we tested for STDs and if so, would it pick up herpes (type 2 - vaginal) or can it only pick this up if you are suffering an attack?

How do you know if you've goit the virus in your system. I know it's tramsmitted via oral sex from someone with an infectious cold sore (most commonly) and can be transmitted by penatrative sex some how.

Can I request to be tested? Should I ask to be tested? Am I panicking too much? I've read that it can reside in your system undetected.

x x x

80 percent of the adult population have herpes - it can be in your system like the warts virus but never bother you. The biggest concern with herpes is that you have a primary infection at time of delivery as the chance of transmission is high. You wont be routinely tested for this - so if you have worries you should speak to your midwife and gp, and perhaps get a swab. But it is highly unlikely you have anything to worry about xx

Ick, 80% of the adult population has herpes? Here they advertise that 1 in 3 will get herpes in their lifetime

I don't know what standard procedure is here but I had my annual pap in May;
I went to an STD clinic and got tested for "the works" including HIV at the end of May;
Got another pap when I went to my first (or second) prenatal appointment, had some other swabbing done around there, and got tested for HIV as part of my bloods.

Not 80% of the population has herpes. 80% of women have had an HPV infection or are carriers but not herpes.

You would know if you were having an outbreak. You would have blistery sores in the genital area. But if you are concerned go to your dr and ask for the testing or the health unit for testing.

Unfortunately, the percentage is the same for the hsv type one virus - that causes cold sores, but unsure on the numbers for hsv 2 which is what causes genital herpes. There are various associations for herpes sufferers that give up to date information on current infection and transmission rates.
