And, BTW.. I can see why they insist you take a car home rather than walking or going by bus, as someone else said, you're supposed to be 'taking it easy' after the birth. I wouldn't bring a newborn (or myself shortly after giving birth) onto the bus, they're full of people with all sorts of germs. Obviously not everyone can afford to own a car, but the hospital staff are just following policy, it may sound awful but there must be a reason for it, even if it's just to cover their own behinds.. they explain to us on our hospital tours that you must have a car seat, it must meet safety standards (they check them), and how you are and aren't allowed to dress the baby to go home to avoid any problems when they're trying to discharge you. And my nurse has discussed it with me too?

Pink Witch - yeah, we have the Britax combination car seat too. It sometimes feels like infant carriers have taken over the world! But ultimately the hospital cannot force anyone's buying choices. It's not their concern how we choose to spend our money.

Ultimately it is up to the woman and her family how they want to get home.

Do they seriously dress your child FOR you????!!!!!! That is absolutely ludicrous.

Well I'd like to see them try and stop me from leaving! If they are going to refuse to let me leave with my child they'd better have a court order or I'd be doing them for false imprisonment or kidnapping!

I will also be getting a combination car seat as Kaya outgrew the infant carrier long before she should have. I am NOT carrying that into the hospital! I just hope my home birth goes according to plan, they don't tell you you need a car seat then lol.

lol Marley, hope it goes well for you, and if you do end up needing to go in, make use of them and get them to carry everything to the car when they try to inspect!

Lol at Pip , i would have some choice words too if they told me how to dress my baby .
My baby is born in March theres been snow this week , Iam taking a snow suit and my baby is wearing it regardless lol .

Luckily i had no problems like that with other 2 so it may just be the usa , They didnt check my car seat or anything they just checked i had one to carry baby out in .

I aggree with if you get a taxi you DO need a seat , But some of us aggree there has to be exceptions like my friend who was perfectly fine to walk 2 min 30 seconds away to her home , And she did have her Pram with her !! . xx .

Exactly. I mean, if I wasn't up to a gentle two/three minute walk I wouldn't be going home yet! Simple as. It's not like we're talking about a mountain hike here! I'm all for taking it easy after the birth, but honestly, normal childbirth does not leave women incapable of a little walk like that! In some hospitals it's a two minute walk to the car park anyway! If they want to say she isn't capable of walking two minutes home then they have to apply that to every woman leaving and not let them walk to their cars
