£20 quid is not alot for safety and you can sell it after?

I dont think they even let you walk home from hospital either now. You must have a seat i think xx

def not safe, the belt will tighten and hurt the baby if you stop abruptly.

I understand why it's important to have a correctly fitted car seat in your car for your baby... but (hoping I don't get flamed here) I can understand that if you don't have a car, if your lifestyle does not necessitate having a car seat of your own that having to buy one just to take the baby home is a bit of a pain. I can't see the problem in taking the baby home in a sling or pram or whatever. Obviously if taking a taxi home then car seat is necessary, but if you are walking home or taking a bus what's the big deal?!

I don't really see why it is the hospital's business how you get home tbh.

I have to agree shifter, just been reading and i dont understand if you are leaving hospital with a pram why they would insist on you using car seat attachment, surely better for baby to be on back in pram... im not saying they dont say you have to have a car seat but just weird policies...

after giving birth the last thing i think midwives expect a mother to do is walk home!! They are supposed to take it easy. obviously its different if you live across the road or on the site, but there cant be many that are THAT close so they put these things into their policy for mothers and babys safety.

Well no, I appreciate that, but given that there have been a couple of responses to this thread saying just that it's not impossible! If I lived onsite there is no way I would endorse the idea that hubby has to drive the car round to pick us up when I could walk all of two minutes, or borrow a wheelchair!!

The other thing is that infant carriers are not the only type of car seat. We have a combination seat, which stays strapped into the car and cannot be carried. So if we were having a hospital birth (or end up transferring) then they would jolly well have to come to the car with us for us to prove we have a car seat! They can't keep people in the hospital building indefinitely just because they have chosen a different type of car seat!

But as Marley said earlier, it may be official hospital policy, but how often do they really enforce it? If she left with bubs in a sling (and car seat in the car) without anyone batting an eyelid then maybe other people do too.

They can't force you to stay in the hospital at all! It's not a prison, if you discharge yourself and your baby, they can't do anything about it. It's another of those ones where people say 'oh they won't let you...' People said they they wouldn't let me go overdue by any more than 2 weeks, what are they going to do get the police to drag me in and force me to be induced? Some people, believe it or not, feel pretty fine after giving birth and may well get the bus home - especially if they don't have much money.

Im glad they are obviously aware of safety for mothers and babies and of course it will hopefully minimise any risk of babies being taken home in cars without car seats. All i think is there has to be flexibility for women who are in different situations etc

think it varies across the country, which i guess is not very professional, if they knew you lived close by i agree you shouldnt need a carseat attachment on pram seems a bit OTT. Im sure they would be more than happy to come to check your car Holly, lol it does sound daft doesn't it.

My argument was based on , getting a taxi, knowing thats how you would travel, and thinking its ok to travel without, or not wanting to spend on it. especially when lots of cheap options then your £20 will go along way over the 12 months use. even if only odd trips. I dont personally know anyone who would never use a car or taxi in 12 months. or come to think of it out of hours gp service, when they pick you up and take you, my lil girl had lots of trips there , when we had no transport. id be too frightend for babys wellbeing to not use a carseat.

but some very fair points have been raised through-out this thread.
