I work in a hospital and i know for a fact its NHS policy, no car seat, baby doesn't go anywhere! Baby has to be discharged off the hospital premesis in a car seat. We are walking home as i live on site at the hospital i work at and even i have to have the car seat attachment on my pushchair or i wont be allowed out!

Its also not the staffs responsability to make sure its fitted correctly either, so make sure you know how it fits into the car before you go to take baby home!

If afraid hn on this one you will have to find one from somewhere! xxx

As the other ladies have said it is not allowed! You need a seat to leave the hospital and will be accompanied by a midwife/staff member to car/taxi, they will not strap seat in for you but they do watch you strap baby in to ensure you leave the premises in the correct and safe manner. In all fairness, a seat is a necessity whether or not you have a car....what happens if you travel in a friend's car, you still need a seat and as for coach travelling the same rules apply!

You can get one Brand New from Ebay or even Argos....they do a Baby Start seat at just £29.99.......not much when your babies safety is paramount!

I have one now, some kind lady told me about freecycle.org and have been contacted by someone who is going to give me a car seat. I wish hospitals would let you know about these rules, when you are struggling it can be hard to meet with, amongst everything else.

I live opposite the hospital and so will just walk home with my baby. I am not planning on trying to find somewhere to park when my house is a minute away!

Presumably this happens, or people don't have cars? What is the NHS policy here?!!

Jelly i'm the same, i live on site at my local hospital as i work there LOL! ive been told as long as baby is in the pushchair in the car seat i will be fine.
Do you have one of those travel systems where pushchair came with a carseat you can attatch to the pushchair?
As long as you arent planning on carrying baby out in your arms you shouldn't have a problem as i know for a fact that they wont let you do that due to health and safety etc! but providing baby is discharged off site in a pushchair they should be ok. I would just check though!
Have a feeling i might end up with a care assistant escorting me to my front door LOL! as technically they have to watch you off so to speak. Could be interesting!

While it may be NHS policy not to let you leave, they can't actually stop you. I left my hospital with my baby in a sling (the seat was in the car) and no one batted an eyelid. It is also not true that you have to have the baby in a car seat when on a bus - for a start they don't have seatbelts! It is not against the law to travel in a taxi without a car seat, it is not a good idea but it is not illegal. Taxi drivers can refuse to carry you though.

if you get stopped in a taxi you will recieve a fixed penalty, thus making it illegal???? it doesnt happen often, but my friends hubby runs a taxi ferm and wont take bubs without car seat cos on occassions they have got stopped and passengers said the driver said was ok. i think different areas and diffferent police forces will treat it differently.

i wouldnt take a free child seat unless i know the person its from, if its been in an accident, its unsafe, and that would me mean your putting your childs safety at risk.

were talking £20 here, not worth arguing about. its totally paramount and necessary!
