It's totally unsafe, and against the law too. If you have baby strapped to your front, and you crash & the airbag goes off, baby would be seriously injured by the force of the air bag. And if you're in a rear seat, baby could be crushed between you & the seat infront if you crashed.

This was actually raised yesterday at my antenatal class by someone and the midwife said under no circumstances would you be able to leave hospital without baby in a carseat. She also said that if in emergeny you had to get into a car with a baby not in a carseat the worst thing you can do is strap the seatbelt round both you and the baby. She said if you need to, then you must strap seatbelt round you then hold the baby but this was only in extreme circumstances and stressed how important a carseat was!

If you truly can not afford a new car seat (which is best) you can look at websites like craigslist or ebay for a used one

One thing to add to what everyone else has said; you can rent car seats for the taxi ride home. I would call your local hospital and see if they know where you can rent one from.

your hospital is not allowed to let you leave without carseat for car taxi or bus travel! i dont have a travel system so needed a car seat mine was £14 brand new on ebay from a proper shop, its not gorgeous but it is safe new, and legal! people travel in taxis and on buses with out carseats, but as far as the taxi goes if you were to get stopped you would pay a penalty. never mind the penalty anyhow, i couldnt even consider taking my new born home without a carseat, my hospital makes u bring car seat in and put bubs in, walks you to your car/taxi and makes sure its put in prop! for less than £20 quid its a must have. xx
