Freaking out!

Ok, so I'm a little nervous...last year I spent 6 weeks in East Africa. When we were there we were told about this parasite bilhazia (schistosomiasis) that you can get from the water there....the local water is used for your showers so it was unavoidable. And one particular location we had to walk through a mini nasty swamp to get to the truck so we all thought, if it's anywhere, it's here.
A few months after we got home, I heard that one of my trip friends tested positive for this parasite. (in the UK). And I remember going to see my DR (who's from south africa by the way) and he didn't seem to really believe that I needed the test. And I think this is part pregnancy brain, but I know he tested me for some parasites, but not sure if it was bilhazia or not? And now another friend was just tested for it and it's positive. He's had it for a year with no symptoms, but went for the test anyway (in australia).
Anyway I'm just a bit nervous on whether I got the test or not. My DR's office is open today, but not taking phone calls, so I think I'll stop by there soon. Makes me a little scared as I have no clue how this would effect the baby if I did have it.

I am sure everything is ok hon,but yes,I would pop to your Doc just to put your mind at ease. It's not pregnancy brain,it's something you would probably still be worried about even if you werent pregnant. Better to be safe than sorry, thats what I always say!

It's no surprise you are worried, I hope popping to your doctors gives you the answers, if you weren't tested it wouldn't hurt to push for it so you will know once and for all and it can put your mind at rest, I hope all goes okay, take care XX

Shistosomiasis is carried by snails - so you are unlikely to catch it if you stay away from reeds where the snails are and stick to the faster flowing waters.

Although your friends appeared symptomless, it is more than likely you would know if you were carrying the parasite. (I studied parasitology including Shisto - geek!).

Defo check with your doc again though - it is always worth putting your mind at ease!

Sadly a lot of people have gotten this while travelling in africa...and this type of parasite can remain symptom free for up to five years.
I went to the DR and the nurse couldn't tell me if the test was taken, and couldn't go ask the DR I'd have to make an appt (probably about 3-6 weeks!). So I'm going to call my OBGYN on monday, even though he's on holidays his nurse will get the results and there's another DR there that can let us know if I need to take another blood test...so hopefully will know more soon.

Awwww hun. I'm sure you're fine. But we all know your mind will be at ease after you talk to your doctor.

Good luck! Not that you need it. Keep us in the loop!

xx
