Car Accidents in Pregnancy

We had a car accident last night resulting in us going off the road into a field and the car rolling. Ambulance took me to hospital as my stomach felt crampy and my neck was painful. Spent hours and hours strapped down to the bed as my xrays showed something not right with one of my vertabrae and they were very concerned I had broken it but CT scan thakfully showed I just have a weird wonky C1 vertabrae, PHEW!!!. Had to have a catheter put in and after that I have decided there is absolutely no way I can cope with labour, catheter absolutely killed!!

3 doctors from the maternity hospital came over quite soon after I arrived at the hospital and as A&E don't have a fetal doppler or a proper fetal ultrasound machine they just used the ultrasound machine in resus which you couldn't really see much on and said Kermit's heart was still beating and that was all they said.

No arrangement for a follow up check up/scan or anything. Is this normal? I was expecting some sort of follow up for the baby just to check everything is ok as my stomach is still feeling a bit crampy.

I'm hoping the fact that my placenta is at the front rather than the back gave Kermit a bit of cushioning from the impact and me hanging in my seatbelt.

I've got a 3D scan tomorrow afternoon but the company say on their website that it is just a bonding scan and they won't do any medical checks on the baby but I am so so worried now about something going wrong after last night I know Kermit is a strong and stubborn character as he's had a very tough 23 weeks so far but that's not stopping me from worrying.

Im sure everything is absolutely fine babe, but if you are really worried then you should ring your midwife and she ca sort out a scan if she thinks its needed. I had a car accident when I was only 8 weeks pregnant, I also managed to flip my car but baby is still here and he would have been much more fragile then, than yours is now. Hope everything is ok xxx

Oh what a horrible thing to happen!

So sorry to hear that - I bet you were worried sick. At least all seems well which is the main thing. I would definately get intouch with your MW or doctor to ask for a follow up appointment/scan to double check eveything. If they dont cooperate Id be tempted to play on some ''uncomfortable' cramps to see if that gets you in.

Good luck with your scan tomorrow, and hope you get this sorted xxx

So glad you're ok. I'm surprised they haven't arranged a follow up scan or something - maybe you could ask your midwife. The 3D scan places don't want to be held liable if they tell you everything is ok when it's not, which is why you have to pay extra for a detailed medical scan (I think), but I'm sure if you explain what happened they'll reassure you as much as they can - they usually have very experienced sonographers. Hope everything's ok x

How weird I came on here I am always in baby & Toddler club never on here!

I was in a car accident last winter at approx 18 weeks pg, went to hospital with cramping pains across my tummy and a sharp pain lower across my tummy. The hospital weren't at all concerned and said it was from the seatbelt, I was told that a problem with the baby would be a pain higher in the tummy.

They didn;t do any follow ups with me either, just a letter for my midwife. The urine sample I gave at the hospital was sus- blood and protein- but neither showed up when I went to my own health centre the next day for the midwife to test.

And everything was fine in the end. Baby boy and Car a write off but the other person's insurance company paid!

What a horrible thing to happen especially when you are pregnant! Glad you are OK.

Just phone your midwife anyway for peace of mind if it will help.

Good luck

Thanks everyone for the reassurance, will give my midwife a call tomorrow and explain what happened and see what she says and I will let the 3D scan person know too.
