Night at a&e...

After suffering from two bouts of excruciating abdominal pains yesterday, nhs direct told me to go to a&e. Waited 3 hours there to get referred to maternity assessment and then an hour and a half there only to listen in on Doppler which while reassuring for someone else to do it, we had done at home. We had to discharge ourselves at 12.30am as it was another hour wait at least to see doc who apparently wouldn't do a scan and would just feel my stomach and prescribe pain relief.

So I'm back home, still anxious and don't know what's causing this discomfort. Really hoping just the worst trapped gas I've ever had in my life and baby is fine!

Waiting in a&e is just such a depressing experience. Me and DH are drained today

Sounds scary! Hopefully it's just a big mix of stretching and gas and all sorts. I've had some horrible pains but they all seem to go away after a couple of hours.

I hope you're in less pain now, A&E always moves so slowly

So sorry to hear you had such an awful time at A&E.
At least hearing your babys heartbeat is reassuring.
Hopefully its just a case of baby lying in an awkward position and causing you this discomfort.
Hope you feel better soon

Thanks ladies I've never been to a&e before and whilst expected it was hardly fast moving we were both shocked by how long everything took and how little you were told. We found out most stuff by overhearing conversations about me at the nurses station!! Couple of the nurses were brilliant though and very calming x

Sorry to hear about that
Hope everything is okay
I don't know much about hospitals but can't you just go to the maternity unit instead of A&E? x

I can now as I eventually was referred to the maternity assessment unit. Not sure if our hospital is different but only way I could get there was via a&e. Seemed bonkers to us too!

Ahh, I thin k it's cause I live on a small island and our hospital is small compared to else-where, but that's good now, going straight there is so much better, I did and got told to stay after about an hour or two, was monitored over-night and booked in for a scan first thing in the morning, so much better than being put here, there and everywhere! x

I had this too, severe pain to the right of my abdomen! I waited hours for the doctor, and he did exactly that - told me to take pain killers! I was sort of reassured that my vitals were all fine, but a scan would have been nice to double check everything! The pain still comes and goes weeks later, sometimes going through to my back, but I don't want to go up to hospital again when it's probably just more of the same!

Hey. Try not to worry too much. Theres not really anything a dr can do unfortunately. I had really bad pains the other week. I was up all night with them but by the next day they had stopped. They were like terrible cramps all around my bump and it was solid while is was happening. But because there was no bleeding there was no need for a scan. I have since felt baby move and heard the heart beat.

Hope this eases your mind a little.
xx

Thanks again for the reassurance. When we decided to leave last night we thought exactly what you said Beth - if it's something awful the doctor can't really do very much so it was better to rest. Baby's heart rate was good at 140bpm and the hospital midwife seemed happy enough. It's so scary when you worry something could be wrong. We have our 20 week scan in two weeks so hoping that will roll round quickly and be reassuring.

It's great to be able to speak to you ladies though - thanks so much
