Couvade syndrome

James has couvade syndrome which means he's having a phantom pregnancy i cant stop laughing at the idea, ive heard people talk about them before but now to know its real and not something made up has had me in stiches.

Me and James went to the doctors today as he had been having back pain, sickness and mood swings and we were really worried as he never gets ill and the doctor was like have you ever heard of couvade syndrome, its phantom pregnancy in men whose girlfriends/wifes are expecting and it tends to start in 1st tri and can last all the way until the babys born. The doctor gave us a print off about it and it says that people who have experinced infertility/ problems during pregnancy there OH tend to get it as they tend to be really anxious and nervous so it makes so much sense that James is suffering after what happened with Lauren.

Has anyone else's partner been suffering with this??

We have been joking about this, as my DH seems to be putting more weight on than me, is getting bloated after meals and it's seems to be me having to do the tip-toeing around HIS moods!!
I don't mean to sound rude by saying we were laughing about it btw!!!
I did however think 'couvade' was one of those internet terms so it is interesting to hear an actual GP talking about it.
Tell James to put his feet up ... but make sure he's still looking after you too!!!

I no what you mean about joking about it, to be honest i didnt even think it was a real thing. James has got like a little baby bump and its so funny to see because he is such a slim person he really does look pregnant. Im not telling James to put his feet up, im still up and doing everything so he not using it as an excuse lol he knows how bad i feel now.

Dippy Dee - Im not feeling to good at all, having some cramps and so scared it going to happen all over again, im given it a couple of hours and if there no better im going hospital, how are you??

I know this is an older thread, but i just need some advice. Im a first time dad to be, expecting june 20th. Im pretty sure i have couvade syndrome. It sucks really bad. Im so much experiencing back pain, but more the lack of appetite, lack of sleep, anxiety, and upset stomach. Im almost convincing myself because of fear of being a dad, that the easiest thing to do is bail on everything, and then everything will go away, knowing fullwell thats going to make things worse, pssibly even having my wife go into premature labor. Seeing as how you JEMMA, have sort of experienced this kind of thing before, i wanna know if its just my mind thinking these thoughts, and if it will indeed go away....Im in rough shape LOL...HELP?

Crenn, I randomly found this thread completely by accident. I don't think she'll answer because this is such an old thread.. not even sure if she uses this website any more. The bset thing to do probably is to go to the doctor. As far as your wife going into preterm labor... I wouldn't stress myself over it. Just do what you need to do as a father, and things will be ok, even if you are having symptoms of couvade. But, I'm not a doctor, and only a doctor can help you the best way possible. I don't know if you are in the US, but I know it's more common in the US and Canada, so I highly doubt any doctor would laugh at you bringing it up. They'll probably give you some guidance and other resources. Good luck!
