Bleeding gums??

i feel like i'm falling apart!!

The last couple of days my gums have started bleeding when i brush them (still makes me gag too

). Also, i'm starting to have a tender spot above where i need a filling, so worried i may need a root canal (i;ve been avoiding the dentist like an idiot..)

Anyone had any dental care while they're pregnant? I normally go privately, because i'm quite a nervous patient. I know you get free dental care when you're preggers, but where i live in London most of the NHS surgeries don't seem to be taking on non paying patients. So i may just bite the bullet and go private again, even though i'm not working at the mo.

I'm just a bit worried as i've read that tooth infections can be harmful during pregnancy....if it's not one thing it's another!!!

I've had a LOT of teeth issues since becoming pregnant!! I actually just found out I have gum disease! Not to startle you but it began when I noticed my gums were bleeding when brushing and flossing. Now its to the point that parts of my gums are peeling away from a few teeth. Luckily it can be fixed and a RIDICULOUS cost..as usual..hopefully you can get it all sorted out soon!! I wish we had free dental care when pregnant over here!!
And its so true, if it's not one thing its another!!

I'd pop to the dentist. Mines lovely, he said I should be using a soft toothbrush near my gums. X rays aside, I think dental work is safe and I have heard some preggo horror stories. I didn't want to I was eating dinner at the time but for some reason my OHs aunt felt the need to give details about her exploding tooth that was replaced by a pigs tooth saga

Use a soft tooth brush I read that earlier on as you can get gingavitus. Also my gums bleed its hormonal. Lost part of a tooth also , probably due to all the throwing up i do.

I've started to hate brushing my teeth now cause I would gag everytime, and it doesn't help that I spit blood everytime, no matter how carefully I brush. I'm thinking of switching to a softer bristle toothbrush, maybe that'll help.

About the dentist, I haven't gone to one ever since I got pregnant...I probably should but I'm terrified of dentists so unless something alarming happens, I probably wouldn't

Anyway, It's not mine, it's HIS family. I mean, mine are all nuts, but in a flagrantly psychotic kind of way. His are scarey repressed, that's much more frightening.

Kateqpr, sorry to hear you're having dental issues.

You really need to go see your dentists asap, don't leave it and run the risk of getting a nasty infection.
Personally i'd say if you are used to private dental healthcare, then stick with it as NHS dentistry is a whoooole different ball game.

I just had a spanking new crown fitted all on the NHS - what a fortuitous time for the old crown to fall out (well, it got stuck to a toffee and pulled out, if truth be told but I didn't mention that to the dentist). All for freeeeeee!

I go to a University dental practice (same place as when I was at uni 14 years ago, but they've never kicked me off their lists), and as far as I'm aware any member of joe public can sign up to a university dentist and I assume they are all NHS - are there any Unis near you Kateqpr?

At the university i went to, and as far as i am aware with most dental institutes you will need a referral from your dentist. The quality of dentistry at a teaching hospital is actually very good, as is some of the materials used, and the more difficult cases can be undertaken due to the supervision of a specialist consultant.

However just be aware there is no choice as to who will carry out the treatment, from a second or third year student who hasn't cut a crown before, to a post-grad who is just finishing off their final cases for their specialisation..... it's all pot luck.

Oh and you will be in the chair for hours.
