Im totally confused by this! 18 weeks and your FIRST ultrasound?! WTF!?

Im in Canada too..BC actually. And this pregnancy Ive had an ultrasound at 9 weeks to date the pregnancy, I had two others because of issues and a third one at 16 weeks. I have another on Sept 30th.

I dont know if this is so much a Canada wide problem as it is who your health care person is. Ive had the same doctor for pretty much my whole life and he is wonderful. I think sadly doctors in Canada (BC especially) are pretty much over general practice (as my doctor says its too much like hard work)...and it's getting nearly impossible to find a good midwife/baby doctor (baby brain kicking in here..I cant remember the right name) because there are so few.

I cannot believe you have to wait so long. I would be up in arms over that!

And pennysbored..are you saying you only get ONE ultrasound period?!

WTH?! I have seen various pregnant people waiting in the ultrasound waiting rooms...all at various stages. I spoke to some and most were having normal healthy pregnancy..and were just having routine ultrasounds.

It was the same for me as well (also from Canada). I think they only give you the 12 week scan if you are unsure of your dates or your pregnancy is considered high-risk. I was neither and didn't have a scan until 19 weeks. Like the other gals have said I think that's all I'll get unless there are complications. My doc did the heartbeat at 14 weeks so I would definitely ask about that at your next appt - I get it done every time now. It definitely will help the pregnancy seem more real.

Good luck! I know waiting sucks!

i'm honestly at the point where i can't wait another 4 weeks to hear the babies heartbeat, and see my baby..
that i'm tempted to go to the emergency room here and bluff a little to get one or the other, or even both....
i am just so paranoid about it........
i know it's bad to fake it, but i'm going crazy here..

go here. I think I am going to do it when I am a little further along, but I think it is a good investment.

Sorry to hear about all this. Hopefully this doppler comes soon....if not maybe cancel the order and get the Angelsounds off of Ebay, that is what I have and it is the best thing i ever bought.

hope it all works out for you.

Wow..that does really suck. I had no idea others were having to wait so long.

My doctor mentioned that I would have another ultrasound...but now that Ive moved to the maternity clinic Im wondering!

I know Ive had so many due to some problems. I wonder if maybe Ive also had so many just random ones because of my Rh factor..and my previous m/c?

Im so sorry you ladies are going through this.

Wow.

I only had my 12 week scan because I asked my GP for a scan, not my OBGYN....and I was getting married and stressed about everything and just wanted to make sure everything was okay.

maybe ask for a requisition from your family doctor.

Sorry to hear you have got no help .
I dont live in canada and the only way i know you dont get a 12 week scan here in the UK is if you know exactly when you fell pregnant .
I hope your doppler arrives soon to giev you peace of mind , And on a positive note ... At 18 weeks they can tell you sex of baby hun . xxxxxxx .

The quality of care that you get in the UK varies depending on where you live. I would certainly try to get prices for a private scan to put your mind at rest.

me and my OH had talked about getting the 3D/4D scan done... you can get amazing packages with like a 30 minute DVD of the little one bouncing around in there, you get pictures, they tell you the sex, etc... it's really amazing. but they aren't there to diagnose. it's simply an extra. we're definitely doing it, but they suggest waiting til 25-30 weeks though because then baby is bigger and you can see more etc.
