Actually as someone who works in this field my advice would be to do very little at this stage until you know what the cause. Its hard to give you anything useful over here as I'd need to know stuff like:
1. what movements/positions make it worse
2. Is the pain 'inside' the shoulder joint or superficial
3. What type of pain is it, i.e. sharp stabbing or dull ache?
4. Is it to the front or back.
5. Does it hurt more when you take and hold a deep breath.
6. Is it worse at particular times of day?

I would stick to a hot pad for now - stay away from deep heat creams as sometimes they can do more harm than good.

Sadly you could have anything from s strained muscle, trapped nerve (very common in the shoulder-neck area), or in fact you could be experiencing what is called 'referred' pain - you have a problem elsewhere but the pain is felt in the shoulder.

Thanks spelbound, ill give you some of the answers see if you can make an educated guess, lol.

1. what movements/positions make it worse- it hurts when i stretch or reach for something and if i turn to the left (its the right shoulder playing up) it hurts when i lay on my back and right side too.

2. Is the pain 'inside' the shoulder joint or superficial- not to sure about this one, its sort of round the bottom of my neck to half way across the shoulder and id say it was inside the joint.

3. What type of pain is it, i.e. sharp stabbing or dull ache? -its like a sharp stabbing burning pain, take my breath when it catches me unaware.

4. Is it to the front or back. -all to the back, no pain in the front at all

5. Does it hurt more when you take and hold a deep breath. -its hurts around the bottom of my neck, but not all the way across my shoulder.

6. Is it worse at particular times of day? -its usually worse at night, but it has been bad all day today, though some days its worse than others.

Can you tell anything from that? like i said im off to the docs on thursday anyway (should have gone well before now)
Thank you.

Again very hard without seeing you in person but it sounds like one of the muscles that runs across the top of your scalupa (shoulder blade).

It may very well be a problem with your neck, but the strange thing about neck problems is that its very rarely the neck that hurts itself as it is low in muscle and fairly imobile. The result is that the muscles that control the arms end up hurting.

Place your arm behind your back with your thumb pointing up towards your head. This is a neutral position for the scapula. Get your OH to massage (using his thumbs) the muscle that hurts. It wont be particularly comfortable, but the act of disrupting the muscle (breaking it down) forces it to heal in a more stretched position.

If you were not pregnant I would suggest you sleep flat on your back with your head straight for a few days. No miracle cure I'm afraid. Remember to hold on to a door frame and lean to your left in order to stretch the muscle. I say this as the burning pain suggests to me that you have pulled a muscle.

Just take it easy and avoid doing to much with it. Its in an awkward place so its going to be a bitch to heal.

Good luck.

Not wanting to cause a freak-out, but referred shoulder pain can be a sign of pre-eclampsia. Best to visit a doc and get your blood pressure checked.
