You are so right - timing is everything.
In Canada, we get a full year of EI (employment insurance) for mat leave, as long as we have been employed for a full 52 weeks before that. I don't believe it has to be at the same job, it just has to be 52 consecutive weeks. EI certainly isn't living a life of luxury, but it's fine if you've budgeted and your partner has a good job. I do not know how a single parent would manage, though.
I also don't think it's fair that you basically get punished if you've just started a new job and will be due to have baby before a full year of working.
