Question

Maternity Grant

Hello all, I will be leaving work to start maternity leave early December (baby due first week of Jan) as a single parent does anyone know if I would be entitled to the Maternity Grant?

Cheers Kasey x

The sure start grant? I think you have to be on certain benefits to qualify...? Check with your local sure start they may be able to tell you

You should be, but you may have to wait until after the babies born, and you will be able to get child tax credit. You have 3 months to claim after the birth date. I could be wrong though.

i think you have to be out of work and on income support to get it, but if you go down to the jobcentre and speak to them they will tell you all the info u need

You can apply for the Sure Start maternity grant 11 weeks before your baby is due and up to 3 months after. You or your partner have to be in receipt of Income Support, Income based Jobseekers Allawance, Working Tax Credit with a Disability element or Child Tax Credit at the higher rate.

Just make sure that your midwife completes the back page fully as that sometimes ends up with the claim being refused.

Hope that helps
