Angry

Dentist - grrrrrrrrrr

Just rung the dentist for an emergency appointment, as I've not slept or eaten anything solid all weekend cos of toothache.

When I explained the problem to the receptionist, she said "Well there's not a lot he can do, as you're pregnant"

Fine then - I'll just not eat or sleep and be in constant pain for the next 4 months then!

Grrrrrrr

(got an appointment for this afternoon though....)

Aww poor you, I really sympathise with you after having lot of trouble with my teeth over the last year. Although there's stuff the dentist won't do, like fillings and root canal, they hould be able to get you out of pain. Let us know how you got on hun, hope you feel much better soon.
xx

As far as I know the dentist can do anything now that he could do before you were pregnant. I had a dental x-ray recently, they cover your belly with a lead apron and are only taking a picture of your mouth. They probably wouldn't have done it if I was first tri, but said further along it is perfectly safe. I was also told that the freezing is safe as well as it is just a localized effect.

Good luck, I hope they can fix you up!

Thanks everyone. The dentist said I had an infection across 3 teeth. He said they got infected from my sinuses, as the roots sit in the same cavity (I never knew that!). He's given me antibiotics and the pain is going down already. Should be feeling better to travel to Cornwall on holiday tomorrow.

Glad I didn't listen to the receptionist!

I hope you told him what the receptionist said to you. Very rude. I hate it when people think we can't do anything now that we're pregnant. Grr.

So long as he didn't give you any Ibrufrophen for the sweeling, then all should be fine.

I have read in numerous preggo books that it is in fact really important to keep up dental visits (even get extra cleanings, if you're prone to gingivitis) when pregnant. There's a scary correlation between gingivitis and pre-term labour, believe it or not.
Did you mention to the dentist what his receptionist said to you? Not to get her in trouble or anything, but what if you hadn't bothered going in on the basis of her caring, kindhearted advice (my voice is dripping with sarcasm right now!)? If it was my dental practice, I'd want to know.
At the very least, she should be set straight about dental work during pregnancy because it is actually a big deal, health-wise, and she may be influencing women the wrong way.
Just my two cents, anyway.
And huge sympathy for the sinus infection - I had one of those start to affect my teeth once, too. Misery!
