Irritated and excited. (Long)

Had my 20 week appointment on Friday with the local OB/GYN. I wanted to do a home birth but finances just keep getting worse so looks like we're not going to be able to. The b**** has flat out refused to give me an ultrasound. Because I'm a Medicaid patient. Her words! I was hoping to get a look-see - you know make sure everything is developing properly. I had called Medicaid prior and they said they will provide one after 14 weeks and more if the doctor deems medically necessary. Doc said if they think something is wrong then they may give me one between 34-36 weeks. On top of that she would not even acknowldge hubby's presence and then insisted on sending me for more testing for Hyperthyroidism when all of my thyroid numbers have been normal, I have no symptoms, and I am gaining weight appropriately. *scratches head* Ok so in the grand scheme of things this isn't that bad - but good Lord I am pissed off!

On the plus side - I scheduled a private scan for July 11th to see if we can find out the sex! $100 is a little pricey but it looks like it's my only option to see the baby before it gets here.

So strange how different countries do things differently!!! Here in the UK the 20 weeks scan is taken seriously and called an 'anomoly scan' where bones, spine and internal organs are looked at. I mean surely it's 'best practice' to do so everywhere, as it must be based in some medical or research evidence?????

Good on you for going for a private scan! Such a shame that you have too. Oooooo bloody doctors and medical schemes!!!

xxxx

Thanks. Sometimes I wish we had the system you guys do - at least then I wouldn't have to worry about the costs. I know you're system is far from perfect and in some ways ours is better but having one less thing to worry about finances wise would be really really nice.

The NHS get slated a lot and yes its far from perfect but we are very lucky to have a health care system that is free at the point of delivery for everyone.

At least your private scan is all booked hun.

I am sorry you had that experience - it sucks. I have private insurance, so I haven't faced the same issues as you.

Hey, I don't know where this person is getting their info. I was on medicaid with 2 of my kids, and I got my 20 week scan. Of course my dr. did it in his own office, but I didn't have to pay for it since it is considered a standard of care. You should call your insurance carrier and find out why they are denying it. By the way, I lived in OKC at the time, so it shouldn't matter what state you are in.
