Hi, sorry to intrude into your thread but i thought some of you (especially in the UK) might find this interesting.

http://www.babiesnappies.co.uk/2008/...ws-made-clear/

to summerise it basically says that it is illegal in the UK to ask a woman to stop breastfeeding a child in a public place up to 6 months of age under maternity laws, and then after 6 months the right to breastfeed in public is covered under the 1975 sexual discrimination act and has no age limit.

i am also pretty sure that England now has the same fining system for places that ask women to stop breastfeeding as Scotland (£2500 i think?).

so next time anyone tries to question you just politley inform them that it is infact them who is breaking the law and ignore their stupid comments.

well done for standing up for yourselves and not being bullied by idiots

This whole issue really gets me wound up! I fully intend on breatfeeding if I can! It makes me so angry and sick that stupid wan**ers like the man at the zoo could potentially make a woman feel so mortified that she may not want to breastfeed anymore.

Also, what about men that walk out and about in the summer topless? We aren't the only ones with breasts! I have seen men of all shapes and sizes with their bits lopped out and nobody ever complains although I find that repulsive!

Breastfeeding is so natural... I dare anyone to say anything to me in public if I feed our baby ( I would for my own modesty not just wap them out, but be discreet)... they will get a massive piece of my mind and they'd wish they never said anything!

You stick up for yourselves girlies!

I think the problem people have with breast feeding in public is that the breast is so sexualized. You would think people could tell the difference when breasts are used in a sexual manner and when they are being functional but there are a bunch of 'der der der's' who refuse to be more mature and differentiate between the two.
I personally would not breast feed in public but it is your right and your child's right to breast feed in public. Baby's need to eat too and ass hats need to learn to tell the difference when breasts are used to feed a baby and when they are dirty pillows, its not that difficult!

On the opposite side, if you choose to breastfeed in public, you need to realize that everyone else is entitled to their opinions as well. Just like all you pro-breastfeeders share your opinions with the world, why breast is best & such, just realize that some people don't feel that way. I live in the U.S. and I know that here a lot of people are uncomfortable with the notion. Most people pump when they go out so they don't have to pull out the boob.

All I'm saying is, you can't NIP and expect the whole world to applaud you. If someone gives you a dirty glance or whispers something about it, leave it alone. As long as they're not publicly approaching you, they ARE entitled to their freedom of speech as well.
Who said we want applause? I'm just speaking for myself here, but all I want is respect. Don't look at me "wrong" and certainly don't say anything to me while I'm feeding my baby (not directed at you personally). If I get a dirty glance or hear a whisper, I'm still going to give them an earful. I just don't think that behavior is acceptable and I refuse to stand for it. If there is any opportunity to stop the spread of ignorance, then I'll guess I'll take it! lol. The only way BF will become less "taboo" in places is if women stick up for themselves and do it proudly.

People who kick up a stink about mothers breastfeeding their babies in public the way they are supposed to be fed are highly ignorant!

Too bad if your uncomftable with the notion, i say get a life!

And i agree who said anything about applause???? To be treated with respect and not snarled at, stared at or ridiculed would be nice!!!

"The 1975 Sexual Discrimination Act created legal protection for a woman under the provision of goods, facilities and services section. This protection covered a woman breastfeeding a child, of any age, by implication, and meant that she could not be discriminated against for breastfeeding in places such as restaurants, cafes, surgeries, libraries etc."

So yeah - it's illegal to try and STOP someone breastfeeding!

Unfortunately, it is not illegal to ask a woman to stop breastfeeding in any part of the UK except for Scotland. I work alongside breastfeeding counsellors and was shocked to learn of this this last week x

I don't see why women should have to cover up? Would you like a blanket over your head while you eat?
xx
