I hadn't had anything yet because I know that with me it would be like opening the Pandora box!

But you just knock yourself out(well, not literally )...xxx
A small amout of alchocol sporadically has absolutly nothing to do with Fetal alchocol syndrom after the 12th week...

DO YOU KNOW HOW OLD YOU ARE!?!?!?! You are NOT legal missy!!!

I haven't had anything to drink and I won't either. I don't disagree with it sometimes, its just that I read that whatever you get from alcohol, your baby feels 4xs as worse. So if you get a buzz on, your baby is trashed. I felt so bad after that, that I couldn't drink any at all.

Sorry, I could never bring myself to have a drink right now. Too much guilt, while small amounts havent proven to be harmful, they havent really proven to be harmless either.

And if what rae just pointed out is true, then I couldnt do it for that reason alone.

I can wait, 10 months is a short time to give up the booze, and my migraine pills lol! Couldnt quit the coffee though, especially since im working, I got nasty headaches and the coffee is the only thing that helps. I only have 1/2 a cup a day though.

I was told as we start to produce more blood for our growing bellies that a glass of red is actually recommended to improve the circulation.. (not the whole bottle tho lol)

I asked about pre-mixes (i think you guys call them alco pops?) and they said that one was perfectly fine...

I ended up with a large glass of wine 1/4 rose and 3/4 lemonade just so i got the taste of it lol ....

I think as with everything moderation and not going overboard is the key. I will probably treat myself to the same every few weeks at home, but wouldnt drink anything if i was out and about.

I haven't touched alcohol at all this pregnancy and I am not going to.

I have heard that one glass a wine a week is ok, but I am such a worrier that if I did have one, I would worry about it for the rest of the pregnancy. I am sure it is fine though.

Hi everyone. I'm interested in this and as I've got access to to scientific journals from home I thought I'd have a search and see what the latest stuff says. Personally I've not had a drink until about a month before conception and won't have any until after I'm done breastfeeding. I'm not posting this to scare anyone, just because I've access to papers that most people don't so thought I'd share. Here are some excerpts:

Pregnancy and Alcohol Use: Evidence and Recommendations for Prenatal Care (200 Pregnancy alcohol consumption has been linked to poor birth outcomes and long-term developmental problems...Consumption of alcohol during pregnancy is a leading preventable cause of birth defects and developmental disorders in the United States. Even though research has clearly demonstrated that exposure to even low levels of alcohol prenatally can have adverse consequences, pregnancy alcohol consumption remains a significant public health issue...Research now clearly documents adverse outcomes associated with prenatal alcohol exposure. Those with full FAS have 3 primary defining features. First, prenatal and postnatal growth deficiency is evident, with reduced overall height and relative microcephaly common. These children are born small for gestational age, and generally do not demonstrate complete growth catch up. Second, children with FAS have characteristic facial dysmorphology, which includes long smooth philtrum, thin upper lip, midfacial hypoplasia, small eyes, and inner epicanthal folds. The third feature of FAS is central nervous system and neurodevelopmental abnormality...Even in the absence of diagnosable FAS, alcohol consumption during pregnancy increases the risk of poor physical, cognitive, and behavioral outcomes in exposed children. Prenatal alcohol exposure is a strong predictor of low birth weight and preterm birth...In a study of over 1000 infants, consumption of 3 or more drinks/wk during pregnancy resulted in a well more than doubled risk of low birth weight, and a reduction in birth weight of 143 g, associated with that level of gestational exposure...it goes on...

Risk of childhood leukemia associated with parental smoking and alcohol consumption prior to conception and during pregnancy: the cross-Canada childhood leukemia study (200. Maternal alcohol consumption prior to conception (OR = 1.37, 95% CI, 0.99-1.90) and during pregnancy (OR = 1.39, 95% CI, 1.01-1.93) was associated with an excess risk of childhood leukemia, with a positive dose-response trend for increasing weekly consumption (p< 0.05).

There was an article: Maternal drinking of alcohol: the newborn has the worst hangover (200 that sounds like it was what Rae mentioned but annoying there is no abstract and I can't access the full text so can't be sure!

Fetal learning about ethanol and later ethanol responsiveness: Evidence against "Safe" amounts of prenatal exposure (200 This one's really interesting. It shows that low levels don't have an effect on the foetus development but do affect future behaviour: "These levels of prenatal ethanol exposure do not generate evident morphologic or neurobehavioral alterations in the offspring, but they exert a significant impact upon later ethanol-seeking and intake behaviors. Supported by preclinical and clinical findings, this review contributes to strengthening the case for the ability of prenatal ethanol exposure to have effects on the postnatal organism."

On the plus side another study showed that though smoking can increase the risk of neural tube defect drinking does not. I searched for alcohol and pregnancy together and the majority of articles were about FAS which it seems is (not surprisingly) much more likely at alcohol intake levels much more than any of you are talking about. Interesting the majority of the articles that came up seemed really to be focusing on smoking and certainly give the impression that the effects are much worse with a bigger range of disorders and problems, so watch out any smokers!

They were just a few from this year, I find I've no longer got the energy to look at past papers too! I hope this has been of interest!

Edit: lol! those cool faces are meant to be 8s from the year!

Oh,come on! Who here doesn't think that the stupid US 21 limit is a piece of crap?

I don't know, birth defects can be caused by the consumption of alchocol in pregnancy but seriously people,a glass of (not even a full glass) of wine?

It's true....

I know its really hard to stop smoking. I stopped when I found out I was expecting my daughter 13 yrs ago. Of course that meant I had smoked a cigarette between conceiving her and getting my BFP. I felt bad but as with most things in life, you cant change the past, only do what you believe to be right for the future. There's no doubt he cares enormously about you and you LO, but stopping smoking can be incredibly hard. It's an addiction after all. I read a great book after my Mum (who was a 20+ a day smoker)gave up with no other help after reading it. Smoking comes up on here and in TTC frequently and quite a lot of members have also read and recommended it - here's a link to it on Amazon. It's not the normal 'smoking is bad for you' aproach - after all we know its bad for you but its still really hard to stop.
