I'm Currently Feeling:  | I read a thing recently that suggested that in prosperous times mammals (possibly us included) tend to have more boys. It was linked to the thing that said higher calorie consumption was linked with more chance of having a boy. Maybe everyone is prosperous and comfortable! |

The theory is that a female will be a safe bet (assuming all our aims are to reproduce) as they will get to mate whatever, but their capacity is limited. Whereas a male might be crap and not be alpha and not get any at all, but if it does then it will get loads of kids! So a make is more risky. If times are good, animals can afford to take more risks. But ecological theories are all well and good but they never give a realistic biological explanation of how and why such a thing might happen! |
