So, my 20 week scan isn't until i'm 22 weeks. Its my birthday in just over 3 weeks and my Mum and Step-Dad have said if I want it, they will give me the money for a private scan to determine the sex as a birthday present.

I haven't booked anywhere yet because i'm trying to decide if its worth it or not. Does anyone have any idea how long waiting lists are, usually? There's only a 3 weeks difference between my birthday and my NHS scan, so if I can't get in until after my birthday i'm thinking there might not be much point, if they can tell me the sex then anyway.

Argh decisions decisions. I definitely want to find out the sex, but do I pay for a private scan and find out 3 weeks earlier, or do I wait and spend the money on something else? I dunno!!

First of all, double check that your hospital is allowed to tell you the sex. Some have a policy not to and it would be awful to not have the private scan, then find out that they can't tell at your NHS one!!

I think it really depends on where you live but i enquired about a 3d scan and the waiting time was 2-3 days, so not long!
What are you hoping for? Boy or girl?

Good point Kat, some NHS hospitals wont tell you the sex maybe worth a check first.

They definitely do tell you here. One of my Mum's friends found out the sex of her baby at the same place as me just last week so I wouldn't miss out.

I might just have a proper think tomorrow do some research then ring up some places for prices and waiting time on monday.

Secretly i'm hoping for a girl but I honestly don't mind one little bit i'd be equally as happy with either

I think I would wait for my NHS scan, like you say it's only 3 weeks later. You could then spend the money on a 3/4 D scan later on or something else for the baby?? Decisions........ x

I don't get my 20wk scan till i'm 21wks and i'm desperate to find out the sex and also check that baby is healthy. A private scan has crossed my mind but we've decided to wait and if our LO has legs crossed or in wrong position then we will book a private scan. We had a private NT scan to check for downs syndrome and we were able to book that without much of a wait. Private scans are very different to nhs scans, we got treated so much better.

I think you should just wait... Sometimes the babies dont co-operate and you cant see the sex anyways, so why waste the money? I would book a private 3d or something just after and use that to get some good pics.

I had a private scan 3weeks b4 my NHS scan
1- i couldn't wait any longer AND
2- I wanted to be sue both sonographers told me the same thing
I'm so glad i went privetly, they only tell u if there certain of the sex and when i went for my NHS scan there weren't gonna tell me until i saw the girly bits and asked if i was right. Also on my NHS scan she wouldn't budge and they sometimes have their legs crossed.
If u've paid privatley they'll get u to drink a cold drink and walk around then bring u back in!

I was 16 weeks and I didnt have my '20' week scan till I was almost 22 weeks.

It cost £65 for 20 mins and a tenner for the CD with 15 pics on and it was owrth every penny.

Ps - and if the baby wont cooperate, they let you come back a week later for free.....
