breast milk? (TMI??)

In the last few days I've noticed I've been getting a clear discharge that I can only assume is colostrum - and that'd be fine except I'm only like 17 weeks pregnant (not sure tickers accurate).

Does anyone else get this already? Isn't it too soon? I'm hoping it's just a good sign I'm going to have lots of milk but could it be something to worry about?

I wouldnt worry at all - I had this too at 16 weeks! It was quite bad for about a week but after that it slowed right down. I do still get the odd bit coming out now but it was at its worst for me at about 16 - 18 weeks

xx

I would assume that it starts clear and goes milky?? But I'm just starting to experience these changes myself so I'm not sure??

Colostrum can be completely clear or have a little milkiness to it. Either is fine.

If you happen to eat a lot of carrots or pig out on beets, your milk might also take on those colors, so don't be alarmed if after one of these craving binges you suddenly see orange/red leakage

It is natural to leak anytime in pregnancy as prolactin is produced almost immediately to get the receptors for milk making in your breast ready for production. It's the progesterone in your pregnancy that's keeping you from making actual milk. The colostrom is the breasts natural and economical way for your body to practice making good nurturing fluid for the baby.

When you have the baby and your placenta detaches from your body, and progesterone is no longer being produced, the prolactin takes over and voila, instant (happens 3-4 days after you have baby) dairy for baby.

Colostrum leakage or not is NOT an indicator of milk production. Any breast can make milk, it's how many storage 'units' in the breast there are, and how often baby completely drains those storage units that effects production.

So if you are large breasted, you might have a lot more storage units, and can feed baby less often than someone with fewer storage units, but even then breast size is no indicator of that either.
