Ann-Marie and other SPD/back ache sufferers

Hi!

I went to an early antenatal class at my maternity hospital this morning and it was really good. It was taken by some physiotherapists and they were talking about how to prevent/relieve backache and SPD in pregnancy. They also said they had body tubigrips available for women who were really suffering from backaches and SPD.

They also said that for those who have really bad SPD or backache, they offer some personal physio appointments.

I just wondered if your hospitals offered this service/classes.

I went to a group physio appointment, got reffered to another physio the following week but no one had passed on any of my notes so they couldn't see me. The next appointment they had was the 5th June, which is 3 days after my baby is due so I told them to forget it. They gave me crutches and a support belt though.

Hiya. I'm under an obstetric physiotherapist at the hospital. I have a three strap belt to wear, (which Lewis calls my octopus), although this pregnancy, it doesn't seem to help, it actually make me ache more.
I will be signed on for a post-natal physio class for three months after baby is born.
I don't think you can prevent SPD as such... but you can help relieve the symptoms, with the belts and crutches, and exercises and even pain killers if they are prescribed to you. I will probably be offered codiene again in my third tri, but I'm a bit wary of taking it, and will only take it when I really really need it.

I think the biggest help for SPD, is recognition. If it is ignored as a 'pregnancy symptom', and you don't get the proper advice and care, it can go on beyond pregnancy.

to all fellow SPD veterans
