If it's anything like here in the midlands you wont even see your midwife when you go into hospital, so what she says about pain relief is actually of little relevance to her. When you get to hospital there will be a completely different team of midwives there and if you want an epidural you can ask for one and probably get it no problem. In the meantime I would just nod and agree, then do what you want in hospital

its your choice do what you feel is best and try explaining to your mw again why you feel it is absolutly necessary you get the epidural.

Its so weird how across cultures things are so different. My doc is dead set about not giving me an epidural or any medication, just "incase" I need to have a c-section. which is bs because I'm having a completely normal pregnancy. They just love to take babies out by c-section over here, and epidurals are pretty standard.

Yeah JustAGirlxx, I noticed that too. Also noticed that on most birth vids from the US that they like to make ladies give birth on thier back. It's almost as if they don't trust nature out there. I could be wrong though, it's only what i have observed as an outsider.

Seriously, can you get another midwife? I'd never use a midwife who wasn't listening to me or taking me seriously or expressing her views about "mardy women". How is that helpful?! Can you change to someone less scary??
