My husband wants to get a gun, and we had a discussion about it recently. He argued that he'd keep things locked up and safe, but I tried to explain to him that there is NOTHING you can hide from a child/teen. I would know, because I snooped into all my parents stuff growing up - just out of curiousity. I could unlock my dad's briefcase, found the 'hidden' keys to the office...there was literally nothing they could hide from me. (I was a brat, I know).

On the other hand, teaching a child about gun safety is probably a good idea in a place where a lot of his/her friends' dads probably own guns...there are a lot of hunters around here.

My father is a cop and I've felt safe my whole entire life at night knowing that if someone were to break in with a weapon, my Dad's gun could save our lives!
That being said, we were taught under no circumstances EVER to touch the gun. That it could kill us (like we could ever touch it. It was always on my Dad at all times).
I would hope that when DH and I move out of state and far from family, we will get a gun. We don't need bullets. It's just the fact that it could stop someone from trying to kill us.

LOL Leave it to the good ol USA to have all the 'scary' stuff, lol Ya know, I feel totally safe and comfortable around firearms....after all, my husband and I met in police academy So I just did a count, we have 12 in the house and another 5 in a storage cabinet at my moms. And all of them here in the house are secure in locked cabinets (so is the ammo), little miss is going to be taught from day one that those are BIG no no's. And my FIL teaches gun safety courses, as well as a long list of close friends. Interesting though to see your responses...thanks!
