Labour things you never knew

Sorry to all first-time pregnant ladies but I was thinking about my previous labours and wondered what things occurred in everyone else's labour that they didn't know/ expect?

My first time I went to work with back ache thinking I had slept funny only to find out later it was the start of slow labour!

Another thing that surprised me was that I have never grabbed my stomach in pain like they do in the movies - the pain has always been in my back.

And finally.....feeling sick - I didn't realise I would feel sick during labour. It's happened every time now and although I've never actually been sick it's the worst part of labour for me

Sorry to scare anyone who hasn't gone through labour yet but everybody's labour is unique so who knows what will happen?!

For me, i always thought it was period pain but its way worse and i had front and back labour. I didnt know how things could turn nasty so fast either. From a pretty straight forward pregnancy and first part of labour being fine to result it needing an episiotomy and vacuum extraction! For me, Labour was alot worse then i expected.

Now i have to do it all again in 15 weeks! Im going to try and go drug free again, i dont think this labour could be any worse then the first one.

Although it didn't happen this way for me, a useful thing that someone told me is that contractions in established labour only last around a minute for most people. That means you can look at your watch and know you only have to endure it for a minute which I think would be helpful knowing when it will subside. However I wasn't one of the majority! I had irregular contractions so one finished and another immediately started. Boo!

Id never heard that and it certainly wasnt the case for me either. Mine just kept on coming for 4 hrs (the really bad ones) I recall asking my midwife if she could give me just a 5 minute break hahaha

One thing no one told me was the pressure you'd feel when it's time to push feels like you need to have a bowel movement. They kept telling me to push and I didn't want too because I thought I was going to push out somthing else lol

my mom told me that when she went into labor with all 3 of us kids, she had "an ungodly thirst for milk". after the first one, she knew she was going into labor when she craved milk .

I'm worried about that too! Although I've been told you'll have plenty of time to go to the toilet and empty your bowels before having to go through the pushing process
