Nappies

Just trying to do some calculations here and work out finances.

I just wondered on average how much would people spend on or how many nappies would babies go through in a week?

We are going to use reusable nappies to keep costs down!

Oh I cant remember....

We bought loads in advance and only now we are having to buy more and he is almost 11 months.

Erm I think in the early days we changed him about 8-10 times a day at a rough guess...

We had bought 2 large "bags" type packs of newborn nappies, had a small bag of newborns from a basket thing too. Then it was the next size up quite a few boxes of them...

Sorry I am useless but am sure someone will be along soon with a better memory or upto date experience.

Sorry to gatecrash your thread but out of curiosity when do you go from newborn to next size up nappies on average? I know it would depend on baby's weight/size etc but what is the average age of moving up?

It does depend on the nappies you buy, if you do use disposables, check out supermarket prices using their online sites before you go and make sure you also use your 'bounty pack' vouchers (if in the UK, if in the US look out for 'coupons').

This can really reduce the costs.

I had a link to a really good estimation on nappy usage but can't find it now ... but found this one on google:

http://www.whatprice.co.uk/health/parent/nappies.html

For the really budget saavey - take a calculator with you as different packs have different amounts of nappies and try to work out cost per nappy. Always aim to pay less than 13p a nappy, the best price we've paid is 8p.

Wet wipes also have different numbers of wipes and some are better than others, but aim for about £1 per pack (stock up when offers are on)

I just found my list of things we bought from my pregnancy journal.

132 x Huggies and Pampers Size 1 ~4-11lb
107 x Huggies Size 2 ~7-13lb
346 x Huggies and Pampers Size 3 ~11-20lb
56 x Huggies Size 4 ~18-31lb

My baby was 8lb 11.5oz and once the newborn were done we moved on to the size 2 and he seemed to just progress after a few months onto each size (luckily when we ran out!)

We bought mainly when asda and sainsbury had their baby events on and picked up loads of packs of wipes too when they were on offer, we have started again with the wipes but leaving the nappies until after 20 weeks as I cant decided between disposable or reusable this time as we are in a house with garden...

He was on size 3 for the longest time and only went onto 4 about Christmas/newyear time I think.

Reusable are a great option too if you have the facilities for drying as we were in a flat before with no garden we went for the disposable.

Size 1 approx 4-11lbs
Size 2 approx 6-13lbs
Size 3 approx 9-15lbs

There is always a lot of overlap, keep an eye on how it fits across their tummy and move them up when you think they are ready. If you aim to switch before they reach the upper limit you should use up your supply before they out grow them.

Also worth considering the larger the size the greater the absorbancy, but if the nappy doesn't fit well you'll spend a lot of time cleaning up leaks.
