Car seats

I was talking to my mum yesterday and she was horrified when I talked about putting the baby seat in the back of the car! I said I never see car seats in the front anymore!

So was wondering are u still allowed to put baby sears in the front seat and if so how many of u guys plan to?

Thanks it's my first baby and just feeling a little clueless at present!!

In the US it's backseat only for rear facing child seats. Plus older kids have to stay in booster seats until they are 8 years old AND 80 pounds. (maybe that's just for my state, i'm not sure) My son will be 8 in October and he's barely 50 pounds. I fear he may be in a booster seat until he's in high school.

I was just going to say the same. Where we live (US), I'm pretty sure infant seats MUST go in the back -- too many airbag related deaths I think. If your laws are different, it might be good to review the research on car seat safety - your doctor/pediatrician will also know.

Front seat not allowed here (Canada). Not until 12 years of age. An airbag can kill a baby or small child.

It is NOT illegal to put a child safety seat in the front of your car as long as the Airbags in that side (passenger side) are turned off/disabled. They ofcourse ALWAYS recommend putting the seat in the back. If you have a backseat (some pickups don't) use it instead of the front one if you have an Airbag in the passenger side and can't disable them it is very much illegal to put the seat in the front.

I would imagine child safety rules are the same in both the UK and USA. Just to add I got my information from the DMV in MD.

I would stick to putting bubs in the rear seats regardless of weather you have active airbags or not.

It is against the law in Canada. I don't know about the states. But, in Canada, you will get a ticket. Rear facing, back seat only.

I was under the impression it isn't illegal if your car doesn't have a back seat? Perhaps I heard wrong though I just know what the DMV told me and I didn't exactly trust what they told me either! .

What I didn't/don't know is how long is recommended to keep the seat rear facing? Is it by weight or age?

I also didn't know kids had to be kept out of the front seat until age 12.

Actually, I think I may be wrong. I am trying to find somewhere where it says it is illegal, and it doesn't really use those exact words. Anyways, here is Canada's (British Columbia specific) policy.

Maybe the op can update the posts with some of the links people post, I was also looking for the word 'illegal' and only ever found 'not recommended' I would imagine because of the people who don't have back seats.

http://www.childcarseats.org.uk/faqs/index.htm Seems it is 100% illegal (in the UK) if you have active airbags.
