Birthing center

Is anyone else planning on giving birth in a birthing center? Or has anyone given birth in one before? I've been reading up on them and i'm starting to think this might be what I want. I would like something a little more relaxed than a hospital without it it being so relaxed that its a home birth. I have also been swaying towards a water birth and my midwife told me today that they aren't currently doing them in the hospital that I would otherwise be booked into.
My last pregnancy and birth was all normal and this one is well on track too so I think I might make an appointment to go and have a look around the birthing center near me. What are peoples thoughts on it? X

Here in Michigan we have a birthing center but its actually in the hospital, but it has a different staff, everything is different, but they do have the option of getting you out if something goes wrong. I had my last baby there and it was perfect, it was so quiet--no noise of machines, no constantly having you on a monitor, nurse would quietly come in and not even disturb me, put the doppler gently on listen and walk away. they had a huge tub like 6ft by 5ft, and it was so nice while in labor. I have no desire for a water birth though. Just one midwife, one nurse, me and my husband-it was very nice. But the one thing that was hard for me is I had a hard time finding a pushing position, they have nice queen size beds, and I had never birthed in any other way besides the beds, so I was a little lost when it came time to push. But I'm definately giving birth their again.

We don't have a birthing centre in my city, but we do have a whole new "family-centered" maternity ward, with rooms with tubs and you labour in the same room you stay in. Babies never leave the room unless there is a problem...so right from the moment they are born, they are with you, even at night. I can't wait to see this new ward, as I had the old ones for my other two (babies roomed in in the old rooms too). Apparently these ones are much nicer. I won't be labouring, but having another section, but, it will still be great I am sure.

We have maternity centres which are preferred for low risk births. Not sure I'm going to be able to use one yet, but hopefully my placenta will move...
I'm considering one of those as if I give birth in our hospital and everything is fine they shuffle baby and me out to one of the birthing centres within a few hours. If I gave birth at a birthing centre I'd be able to stay there for 2 days or whatever it is.
However... the one I'd use is all the way across town, and if I gave birth at the hosp I have the option of using one closer to home (funny rules!). I think here I have similar options at the hosp or birthing centre (pools etc, andeverywhere here is a baby friendly hospital), just if I need medical assistance outside of my midwife I'd have to be ambulanced to the hosp. Also if I use the birthing centre there is no option of pain relief like epidurals (which I wasn't planning on anyhow, but...), no Drs, no paediatricians etc.

Hi there

I will be giving birth in a birth center and I did for my 2nd and 3rd birth also, it was hospital for my 1st birth but then changed to the birthing center just in time for my 2nd I would totally recommend it, its been the best experience of my life, it is so much more relaxed than a hospital, the hospital was always over crowded and you were left alone for long periods of time, in the birth centre its really relaxed and everyone just seems alot more happy, the one I use we also get our own room with a double bed in so dad can stay with me and the baby Im all excited now thinking about it lol
