Baby doppler question

Hi all!

I have a couple of questions about baby dopplers...

1) how many of you have them or are intending on getting one?

2) Are they worth the money? Which are the best to buy - the 'cheap' £40 ones or the more expensive £100 - do the cheapers ones work as well?

3) Do you think there are any safety issues surrounding them?

The reason I ask is that I am considering buying one, but I am in two minds. It would be really great and reassuring to be able to listen to my baby's heart beat whenever I wanted. On the other hand, I have read mixed reports that dopplers can have negative effects on the baby (other reports say the don't)/

Thanks girls!

Hiya,

I wasn't going to get one... but I couldn't resist in the end, as quite a few girls on here had bought the Anglesounds, and found it brilliant. I have one now, but I've yet to find the heartbeat. I only allowed myself one when I could feel Bubs move, so that I wouldn't worry of I couldn't find the heartbeat..... There are a few people on here do hear their babies early on though.....

As for the safety issue.... The Angelsound is really good, in the fact tht it works the same as a stethoscope... so there are no waves being sent into the baby....

When I mentioned to my midwife that you could buy the only she was using, on ebay, she got quite cross!! She said that they are still completing studies into whether too many scans can damage your baby... and that the doppler that uses the waves to listen in, are actually way stronger than the scan gun... so you could end up using it everyday, with the possibility of causing harm....

Hope this helps

Hello!

Ive got one, I bought mine for £25 off ebay. Its an AngelSounds doppler and I think its brilliant!

I used a friends at about 12 weeks and could just about hear LO, then bought my own at 16 weeks. My OH never seems to have a problem finding babys heartbeat but im useless - on several occasions ive picked up my own heartbeat and worried myself because it sounded so slow!

I do think they are good and as far as im aware there are no safety issues. I know midwifes dont recommend them though - mine got really funny with me when I told her I had one because she said it causes so many women to worry and call them or the hospital because they cant find the heartbeat. Ive not been able to find it a few times but have tried a few hours later and its been fine.

It is a lovely feeling being able to hear LO whenever you like it and in my opinion helps with bonding too

xx

I bought mine at 10 wks (Angelsounds from RetailTherapy.com through Ebay for £40) I didn't use it until I got worried about lack of movement for a few days at 18wks and it was very reassuring. I have only used it twice since, but those were times when I was driving myself crazy again. Haven't used it since baby has been constantly moving as I don't feel that there is any reason to distress her for nothing. (I read somewhere once that the dopplers sound like a helicopter hovering overhead to a baby - don't know if it's true or not, but I don't want any over-exposure either). I wont bother using mine again unless I feel no movement and even then I'd probably go to the M/W soon after anyway even if I did hear a heartbeat. I don't know if I'm pleased I spent the money or not Aparently I should be able to use a stethoscope to hear soon anyways and I bought one of those for £7.50! As you can tell I don't know whether I'd recommend one or not!

CERTAIN dopplers (they think) can cause harm to the baby - there are specific ones that they know don't.
I intend on getting one - second hand, preferably. After my emergency trip to triage I decided it's more reassuring to have one on hand than have to rush across the city and wait for 3 hours to make sure my LO is okay.

So the Angelsounds one seems to be the recommended one. And if I have read right, it doesn't really use sound waves like other dopplers - so it would be safer for baby - am I right?

I am going to have to decide whether to buy one or not. It seems such a long time to wait till my 20 week scan (in fact my scan is actually scheduled for a day before I am 21 weeks!). Also, as I have an anterior placenta, it could take me longer to properly feel movement. A doppler would probably put my mind at rest. Decisons, decisions...

Thanks girls for your advice.
