Xrays at Manchester Airport

I am going on holiday on Friday - yey!!

But I have been reading about the full body scanners that they now have at Manchester Airport for security and I am a bit worried because it says that they will only randomly pick people to be scanned by it, but if you are picked and refuse then you won't be allowed to fly.

I don't have any problems with the machines from a privacy point of view - coz who cares, but I am concerned about exposing bump to the xrays.

Does anyone know if I could get an exemption letter from the hospital/MW?
Or do I just have to hope that I am not 'chosen'?

Anyone refused the scan and still been allowed to fly? Or anyone have any more info about this?

This holiday is meant to be to relax, but at the moment it is just causing me stress!!

have you looked at the airport website? Maybe it has some guidelines on there for pregnant women.

I would think if they were harmful to pregnant ladies, then you would be excempt from them with a GP note/Maternity Notes??

Sorry not much help, i probably wouldn't have even thought about it if it was me lol

xxx

PS. Enjoy your holiday!

Thanks guys, I have checked the website and it doesn't mention pregnant women it just says that if you refuse you can't fly!

Will check it out with the hospital when I go on Thursday for my next scan (Whoop), will let you know what is said so if any of you need to fly from an airport with the scanners, you will know what the deal is.

Everyone seems to go on about the privacy side of things and not much practical info on how safe it is especially if your pregnant - I would ask dr for a note if she wont give you one maybe take your nhs maternity exemption card as at least that has your details on it and just tell them before you get to the scanners that you are pregnant and would rather not be screened by xray but are happy to be checked over more thoroughly instead?? I dont think you will have a problem to be honest, Im sure they wouldnt stop you flying I think they have had enough bad press have a good holiday :P

Gosh, it wouldn't have occurred to me if I was travelling while pregnant. I can understand your concerns. I wouldn't want to go through the full body scanners myself. I would rather for it to be done by a human, preferably a female official - if I couldn't prove my pregnancy!

I agree with the others here - ask your consultant/midwife for advice. I have heard so many times about expectant mothers travelling on airplanes but no-one mentioned the airport x-rays!

Ooops sorry. The website says they started from Feb 1st.

Don't worry though hun. You'll get more radiation from the actual flight than you will from the scanner.

no thats because they're new. I know our government are hopeless but there is no way they would expose people anything that poses a significant risk to pregnant women, what I would do is ignore people on here saying it's dangerous (are they experts??) and call manchester airport and ask them if there are any risks and what do they suggest you do about it. I'm sure you aren't the first pregnant woman to fly since these were introduced.

Also this is a SCANNER, don't we all have our babies scanned at regular intervals throughout pregnancy
