I do agree that the airport scanners are not dangerous (see my above post). However just for the record, an ultrasound scan uses ultrasound (sound waves) whilst an airport scanner uses radiation. They are not like eachother at all.

I agree with Icy1975.....don't panic everyone.

There is no way the government would risk harming every unborn baby passing through UK airports. I am sure there will be a plan in operation for anyone claiming pregnancy to be searched by a female immigration officer, or in fact these machines will be safe.

Lets face it, we are told many medical things are dangerous, such as medical x-rays, but if we smash ourselves up in a road accident, they don't just leave us there mangled because we're pregnant. It may be radiation, but in limited amounts, for very limited times.

Hi Hun, I went on holiday when I was nearly 6 weeks pregnnnt. I phoned my doctor to see if there were any precautions I needed to take.

He advised that instead of going through the scanners to ask if they could frisk me instead. I did this and the staff were happy to do this for me. I just had to let them know why I wanted to be frisked instead.

However, as i was so early on, I think this was just an extra precaution, but if I were you I would either speak to your midwife or doctor and see what they say.

Have a great holiday

Coming back though I went through the scanners as we had gone to egypt and there weren't any female staff about/working.

OH MY, I have just seen body scanners on the BBC news saying it is being looked into that it may be against Human Rights and a Violation to privacy as it gives a naked view of the person being scanned. Issues such as medical conditions and children being scanned is another issue brought up by the Authority.

I saw the image and it showed a woman having the scan and it looked like she was stood in her underwear on the screen and the man, you can see his bum. Wonder what you would see if he turned around! Look at the link and you will see! I wouldn't want that. It is being described as 'virtual strip searching'.

This 2nd link highlights how scanning maybe illegal since the 1st link.

I wouldnt want to be scanned while pregnant with an airport scanner call them and ask them

without starting a debate i would rather be scanned than have terrorists on my plane, they dont really see you naked its an out line of everything sure if they wanted picture for purposes other than checking for security there are other available routes so as internet which would give clearer photos without going into detail

dont know anyone who would want to use my photo of a security scab for pornographic reasons it a bit silly tbh

anyway have a good holiday, I am too much of a whimp to fly

Looked into this myself as I fly a lot for business. What people don't realize is that during any flight, you get exposed to solar radiation. Ironically, it is a much higher radiation exposure than any X-ray scanner at the airports, whether it's full body scanners or not. Studies have been done on the full-body scanners, and these are deemed safe for pregnant women, babies and children. As I said, you'll get a much higher radiation exposure just by flying, so if radiation in general is something you want to avoid (although deemed safe) then the logic extends that one should avoid flying, as this is the main exposure! I have not avoided it, I'm a doctor, did my research and decided that it is not a big concern.

I have just read now that although you CAN see peoples genitals and whether they have implants etc, the images are not seen by any of the security around you. The images are viewed by someone in a secure room and deleted immediately. They are hoping to bring in female only 'scanner viewers' for muslim woman who enter the scanner.

That is more reassuring. You picture the person looking at you in person can see you naked but that person is in a room out of the way who never sees you.

In the US, DH always gets picked to go through the 'terrorist scanner' as I call it (seriously, 4 times this year!) And he's a 26 year old white male, could not be more Americana if he tried.

He asked when he went through the last time what would happen to me (as I was prego), and they told him that I would have to be manually searched in a private room. They are NOT allowed to xray you.

Even if you're not pregs, you have a right to refuse excess radiation entering your body. They have a manual search for these reasons. Here in US, you don't need a letter, but it wouldn't hurt to have, just in case. You can simply refuse, or tell them you're pregnant. You will still be allowed to fly! They don't want to be liable if anything were to happen to you.

Edited to say: I READ in a book by Dr. Oz You:Pregnant! that 30 hrs on a plane= as much radiation as 1 chest xray. Not sure how true it is, but heads up to all you ladies! I have spent 27 hrs on a plane this pregnancy, so no more flying for me!
