we keep our nappies in an underbed storage box thing with a lid, we use quite a big one cos we have a lot of nappies lol, i wash them maybe every 3 days and we have plenty to get by on in that time, i usually get them all in one wash then i do one cold wash with full powder and one hot wash with no powder, but thats cos mine are left for so long in betrween wear and washing, if you wash every day or even every other day they will be fine with one normal wash

I guess the hard bit will be which ones? and for me its the washing up. If I have to wash them daily, surely the energy spent- light bill etc will not be any more saving?

Any tips from mummies that use cloth nappies- how often do you wash, and how do you store the nappies if you dont wash daily (Taking into account that If I keep used nappies indoors- as its in the middle of winter ill probably create enough toxic fumes to use up as energy, and drive away my hubby!)
I plan on getting enough diapers that I only have to wash every 3 days. At our diaper workshop they recommend putting them in a dry pail with a pail liner. When wash time comes, throw diapers and pail liner in the machine, do a cold rinse, then wash on hot with 1/2 normal detergent (1/4 if he) and then rinse 1-2 times. Then dry in the dryer or line dry (up to you). The machine does all the hard work, lol!

I was wondering about that. Am i suposed to keep the the diapers in a bag (or whatever they are called) when they are in their first wash cycle? DH is worried the "natural items" will mess up the washer

Wash directions vary from type to type. For instance mine (OSFA pocket with PUL outer, fleece inner and microfiber stuffers) are recommended to be washed no hotter than 35C, wet pailed (so soaked) with Napisan, and then washed with either very little detergent or Napisan again. To put them in the wash I can either run a soak on my washer (let it fill up and add to it all day), or add the whole pail to the washer and just run a cycle without detergent to kind of rinse things before the wash. Or some combination of all that.
All the parts are separate so drying, even in winter without a tumble dryer, shouldn't be that horrible.
There are a couple of methods for dealing with solids. You can get a toilet sprayer to wash things off, You can use disposable or washable liners (either flush, toss or use the next method to get clean), you can actually flush the toilet while holding the diaper in there, but I think mostly things just shake off due to the fabric of the inners.

If you like you can run a hot bleach cycle after the diapers (some of them can be bleached, not mine though) to clean the washer out.

Honestly, my diapers go in a dry pailo I wash them every 1-2 days in a normal wash cycle with all our cloths etc. The only thing with doing that is the soaker pads tend to get lint. I use tide free detergent, which some people find controversial.

All of my diapers have been used for over a year almost daily and are still very absorbant and in good condition. I did try an organic natural detergent but it made Jasmine breakout. So I would have to spend some time looking for detergents if I was going to go the natural route.

As for poop... I shake the poop off the diaper and them just spray them off before putting in the washer.

Hanging them on the clothsline is good for them and will bleach stains out naturally.
