I'm kind of doing one in my head. I know what kinds of things I want, and what I want to avoid. I'm also trying to think about what I'd want in different scenarios, i.e. if I need to be induced since that's going to change some of my plans. My midwife said they usually start talking about it around 36 weeks.
I have a little check sheet in my notes and it has things on it like, keep the placenta, vitamin K injection, who you want cutting the cord etc.

I didnt make a birth plan with my first, 2nd one I wanted at home without pain relief, I didnt think of adding things I didnt want to my birthplan. I was lucky and it worked out as planned. This time I've gone from Midwife led care with a waterbirth and no pain relief to consultant led care and restriction of choice due to twins!

Although I am very restricted this time I am going to make sure that my partner knows what I dont want and can speak up for me when the time comes...

I love to plan so I will be making one, knowing that there is a good possibility it could all go out the window at any given moment. I feel like the plan will help me visualize what I do want to happen. I also feel very strongly about a few things such as I want Mommy/Daddy time shortly after before everyone comes in. I also want grandparents to come in first by themselves before everyone else comes in. I think it is a good idea, even if you are planning on just going with the flow to still write down some of the things you feel strongly about

I'm not going to write a plan for my HB, because my doula and midwife know what is important to me and I trust them. But I am going to write things that are important to me in case of hospital transfer or c-section. But for the most part, I'm just going to go with the flow.

Ok so how much influance do birth plans actually have?

Like if I stated no trainee doctors would it be definate that I would get trainees watching?I do understand there are certain things that may go out the window! :0)

I was just wondering about this today!
I have quite a way to go, so it's not something I'd need to worry about quite yet... but I wouldn't even know where to begin.... we'll likely just go with the flow!

I have just started thinking about this. I am not really sure what I want or dont want in terms of birth. But I dont want any students around, I know I just want it to be my husband and obviously myself (And the med staff). Other family can see bub after. I have to just read the books I think and then see what happens!

If you google 'free birth plan' there are LOADS and a lot of them have tick boxes...I have always a basic idea, but using those free samples/templates I've discovered a lot of things I didn't know about and done some research using them as a base...

I'm writing a pretty strict one as I know what I want and I'm pretty bossy...especially when it comes to something as important as giving birth and my baby.

I will be stating firmly that I don't want to be separated from baby unless medically necessary, I want my placenta saved, I want the cord to stop pulsing before it's cut...I am making certain decisions on newborn care - eg taking oral vitamin k for LO instead of an injection, I want to breastfeed - so I don't want any formula given to LO, I'm also going to say no pacifiers/dummies because although I'm planning on using them if necessary, I don't see the point in giving LO one just for the hell of it.

Anyway, just a few things that I'm putting in there that people might not have thought about.

xx

I dont thin it needs to be too detailed and as others said you need to take it as it comes but if there are certain things that you do or dont want then I'd put it on there, such as ensuring where ever you go your birthday partner comes with you, if you want baby bought straight to your chest or given to partner. I wrote in mine I wanted my baby to be given Vitamin K injection, that I would prefer to tear natuarally for as long as possible before have an epiostomy. Also that I was happy for any training/junior medical staff to be present and assist if need be.

It just saves them having to ask you some of these questions which can sometimes help, but I wouldnt panic too much x
