24 wks and white cells in my urine, whats that mean?

hello,I had docs appointment today and urine sample taken, came back with some white cells present. I asked what that meant and was told not to worry, probably thrush or UTI. Now, I know its not thrush, never had it and no symptoms. As for UTI, I dont think so either. No pain, no OTT urinating etc.. They never said anything else. Does anyone else know what it could be? I have just had an awful cold, lost voice and conjunctivitis (been on antibiotics). Would that have a link? They said no more and I left as usual?!

If you have wbc's in your urine you will have some sort of infection. It may not be big enough for you to notice but there is one there. Usually drinking plenty of water will flush it through. Chances are your urine also contained red blood cells, protein and if microscopy were done, they would see a small amount of bacteria.

thank you for your reply.
I am a bit concerned as to why the lady who took the sample never came back after that and the doctor said I could leave?
Maybe they will write to me? I don't know!!
I went and bought loads of cranberry juice and have been drinking lots today so hopefully whatever might be causing it will be flushed out of my body.
If I get any further issues I will go back...

I dont think the docs are that helpful with these things. I think they just assume all pregnant women get them so regularly and unless its a raging infection then not to worry but they dont tell us this!!
I went into hosp on New years day as I had been spotting, I had dipped a pee stick in my own urine as I had been weeing alot even more than what is normal and it showed I had a mild infection. When I got to the hosp was told I had a raging infection and was transfered to the EPU where they dipped my urine again and I was told it wasnt too bad. As I had been bleeding, the doc had to check my cervix and she said 'oh love you have raging thrush infection'. I wasnt given any meds but then all swabs and culture and sensitivity on my urine also came back clear. So is very confusing. If I feel I may be staring to get an infection I just ensure I drink lots of water to flush everything through!

Generally means you have an infection of some kind, your midwife cant give you anything for it really unitl its confirmed what type of infection it is so she may have sent the sample off, thats what mine did and a few days later I got a letter with results and telling me to take them to GP and get a prescription.

When I worked as a med assistant (now I'm in med school), we were always asked when someone was positive for leukocytes *wbc* if they were on antibiotics. Yes, this can cause a false positive. Not always. It depends on the antibiotics. If it were a UTI, odds were that you would also be positive for blood in your urine.

The diagnosis is combined with the results the dip stick showed for protein, nitrites, blood, and ph balance. It could be contamination from vaginal secretions. Most commonly it is a UTI/kidney infection of some sort, but you would have symptoms, and most general spectrum antibiotics (which you were on) would take care of it anyway.

Regardless, here in the US, we ALWAYS had to send the urine sample to the lab if it was positive for WBC. We would get in big trouble if we didn't, because the truth is, you never know!

Yeast infections often happen when you are on antibiotics...I got one once from being on them and have a friend who automatically starts taking monostat if she needs to go on antibiotics because it's a guarantee she'll get a yeast infection.

Its most likely a mild bladder infection with no symptoms yet. The only thing it could be is an infection somewhere in your urinary tract, hence white blood cells being produced to combat the infection. At the very worst your kidneys could be infected or functioning poorly.

They would look further if antibiotics didn't help the infection. Good luck and I think you just got lucky and caught a UTI sooner than the infection started causing obvious symptoms.
