Under Consultant Care - what to expect

as the title says really - I have been put under consultant care for my pregnancy due to high BMI and I am not really sure what to expect. I have an appointment with the consultant shortly after my 20 wk scan

anyone care to share their experiences?

I'm under consultant care and to be honest its not as interesting as it sounds lol. I see the consultant every 2 weeks, for 5 minutes while he writes illegible crap in my notes lol and asks how I am. Pretty boring. With your bmi they will just weigh you, do your blood pressure and urine and then give you a glucose tolerance test I find the midwife much more informative. xxx

Hi - I am under consultant led care as my baby had a large nuchal measurement. I just have more appts at the hospital antenatal clinic than "normal" pregnancies and I've had the same experience where I wait ages to see the consultant who asks if I am well and then scribbles in my notes and asks to see me again in 2-4 weeks. pretty dull really and I much prefer seeing my midwife xxx

Conversely, I have a high BMI, saw a consultant at 17 weeks, was handed back to my midwife as being low risk, have a random glucose test that should've been done last Tuesday but MW made up excuses not to do it so it coming to my house to do that and my bloods tomorrow (so I don't get the glucose tolerance test that a lot of high BMI ladies get, unless I come back with a high reading off my RBG test... and I think that stinks seeing as my mum and gran are both diabetic, my mum having developed it in pregnancy with my small brother!). I get a presentation scan at 36 weeks and see the consultant straight after. I am supposed to see an anaesthetist by 34 weeks but have still not received an appt.

Consultant asked me questions, gave me a little advice, tested my wee, BP and weight/height. No heartbeat, no fundal measurements. I don't get any growth scans either.

My MW is not so good and doesn't follow her responsibility... like I said, she is meant to be coming to my house tomorrow to take my 28 week bloods and do my random glucose bloods... whether she turns up is another thing.

So in short, expect nothing and you will not be disappointed.

I was told I would be under consultant care due to high BMI of 36 (instead of 35) but when I had my booking at the hospital luckliy the midwife grabbed one of the consultants in the corridor and they saw me then. They said as I was in good health other than my weight that they would sign me off to GP and Midwife care but I would have to to extra scans at 30 & 36 weeks to check the position of the baby and that I would have to have an appointment with an anesthesiologist in case I need an epidural.

What I really can't understand is that I am 5ft and a uk16 andsomeone I know who is a few weeks behind me is about 5ft4 and must be about a 20 is having regular care from the start so she is able to have a homebirth or use the birthing center as I cannot

You can refuse anything . Don't let them bully you. I get so fed up with people assuming because I have a high bmi I cannot give birth naturally lol! xxx

I got told at my booking in app at 12 wk at the hospital that I would
be under joint care but have heard nothing since?! I have my 20 wk scan thurs, mw app at my docs (different mw to hospital) at 25 wk and a glucose test at 26 wk, other than that I haven't been given any other app?! oh and it's due to high bmi why I should be in joint care?! should I have seen a consultant yet? x
