I don't want OH parents being near bean after smoking...

Hi all,

What shall i do???

Me and OH don't smoke.

My parents don't smoke.

OH parents, sister (of 13wks old twins) and 2 brothers smoke.

They smoke out the back yard of their home but absolutely stink when they come in.

I sometimes see his dad touch the twins near the mouth saying 'coochy coo' just after having a ciggarette.

I can't stand the thought of them touching our baby after having a ciggy.

I don't want to be unreasonable!!!!!!!

Help!

Replies from smokers appreciated..............xxxxxxxxxxxx

I quit smoking when I got my bfp. The only family members who smoke are my parents but they live 4.5 hours away so won't be much of an issue for me. You could ask them to wash their hands after smoking or have some of that hand sanitary cleanser around to use before they touch the baby.

My DH smokes and I feel the same. He is desperately trying to give up ~ I just hope that he can do it before our LO arrives. Could your OH talk to them...I would if it were my parents! None of our family smoke so I won't have the issue but if I were you I would try to broach the subject of extra strong mints....soap to wash hands before they go near your LO. My DH always brushes his teeth and washes his hands before coming near me after having a cigarette, let alone our LO!!!

It's a difficult one though.....good luck.

I smoke, am down to 3 or 4 half ones day after eating and getting there, in fact I have set my quit day as tomorrow. My DH smokes but as he has only just accepted he has a drink problem and just quit alcohol I can't expect him to quit the cigs too just yet!

The only other person close to me who smokes is my sister's dad, he smokes about 40 a day.

We will be asking him to wash his hands if he wants to touch LO after smoking. Once LO arrives all smokers will be asked to go outside, including DH if he hasn't managed to quit by then.

Perhaps try the approach of, Midwife said you shouldnt be near baby for 15 minutes after smoking, and you should definitely wash your hands, might help. My midwife has said this to me and my partner as he smokes. They may think this is a little excessive, but if it at least gets them to wash their hands then its a start.

I'm a smoker (although I'm going to start my quitting tuesday!!) But I completely understand how you feel..

Personally as a smoker I would never smoke around a new born and if I couldn't wait intill the baby had left to have a smoke then I would wash my hands, mint up etc etc before going anywhere near them!

But as it's you're child I don't feel it's unreasonable to ask for people to wash their hand etc.. At the end of the day when LO is in YOU'RE house it won't have to breathe in smoke so why should the baby at someone else's house??

I would just talk to them.. But like I said I think you're well within you're right to ask them not to smoke around LO

I like the idea of having a hand sanitiser available. Perhaps your SO could ask his family to make sure they use it before touching the baby.
I am in a similar situation as my MIL smokes and my SIL has no problem with it at all. I do look like a completely irrational b***h but at the end of the day my children are my responsibility. I try not to 'sweat the small stuff', but there were times when the kids were little that she was smoking whilst holding them....NOT ACCEPTABLE. My DH supports me completely and that makes all the difference.
