Counting movements....what ones and how many?

My baby moves lots over the course of the day now, especially in the evenings, though that could be because it is when I sit down as I don't sit down very much at all during the day so probably don't notice movements then.

I know that from 28 weeks you keep more notice of movements. Is it ten movements a day or ten in two hours? I read both on the internet and am confused as I thought it was ten in a day. Also do you just count the kicks and pokes or do you count the rolling around movements too. If you feel say 4 kicks in a row is that 4 movements or as they happened at the same time does it count as one? Sorry I am so clueless sometimes (well all the time really).

OMG! Just goes to show that Googling is never a good idea as it makes you more confused. Hopefully someone will be able to answer for us.

Hello. Its 10 movements a day. Any kind of movement weather it be kicks, rolls, pokes. Basically anything that is your baby. 4 kicks in a row is 4 movements. You will get a pattern, and get to no whats normal for your baby.I think that s the most important thing. So like you said you get more at night. You will probably find like me that you get way more than 10 a day. So to be honest i dont count as such but i no her pattern.i just no i feel her at regular times throughout the day. If she is having a quiet day then i pay more attention then. But normally i would say i get something at least every hour. Some days it feels like something every minute lol. Buit its good to no a pattern. Maybe to start with keep a kick count sheet and you should notice a time when LO is most active. If you even notice no movment or if you have a massive reduction in movemnets then yoiu can try a few things to get them moving. Yoiu will probably have something that you do already. You can drink something cold like juice and lay on your left side, or gentally riub or poke your belly. Or walk around a while, or play music to them.I love this as it really gets her going. There are lots of different things but if yours is a maddam like mine some days she will juist be quiet. On these days always phone up and speck to your midwife. There is a sticky in the thrid trimester that stresses the importance and is worth a read.

Thank you very much for this. I will have a look at the sticky thread you mentioned too.

right queen of movement here !!

10 Movements is not good enough! It should be ten kicks per 12 hrs, rolling and spinning is not classed as good enough movement.

If you get 4 kicks one after the other class it as 1 movement if they are a good few minutes apart then each kick counts

The most impostant thing is to be aware of the pattern of movements and ANY change to always get checked on reduced movement can be fatal as i discovered I even told my consultant that i couldnt feel him move anymore was sent home and next day he had gone. Don't want to scare you but if i can stop it happening to only one person by putting a bit of knowledge into you all

goodluck to everyone xxx

Everyone argues this one, but here is what I've heard...

It's 10 movements per day, although since it's sometimes hard to feel them when you're at work or moving around, a lot of doctors tell women to lie down for an hour or so (at the same time each day) and measure the movements in that time period, which is perhaps why you've seen it explained this way.

Some women have also been told that one round of 6 movements (for example) only counts as one movement, and you have to have 10 rounds of movement per day. My midwife said 10 kicks is fine.

At the end of the day, you should ask your personal midwife for elaboration. She will be able to explain better.

This is very interesting. I have just started to wonder about this myself as the time approaches that I am suppose to be paying attention to this. Funny, when I was pregnant with my son 7 years ago, no one at all told me about counting movements or anything. I went blissfully along in my pregnancy and never thought about it much at all, lol... seems like there's so much more to think about now that I'd never considered before, and it serves to increase my worry, I have to admit.

I never knew there were different points of view on fetal movement, so it's good to keep that in mind, listen to all the perspectives, and come out of it with one's own balanced conclusions. I gather from what I'm hearing that it's about noticing the patterns of baby's movements and that it will usually occur a number of times throughout the day, and to notice any change in the pattern or reduced fetal movements, etc..

One thing I've always been curious about, and I know this is a sensitive question so I ask with the greatest of compassion... is there anything doctors can actually do if the baby stops moving and is perhaps in the process of dying? I'm just wondering if there's anything they can actually do to stop this, or do they try doing an emergency section then to intervene, or what?
