I had the stabbing cervix/vagina pains, they started at 19 weeks and lasted about a week, then stopped, now im having them again - and i'm nearly 25 weeks now and all looked well at my 20 week scan, so try not to worry, it sounds pretty common and incompetent cervix occurs in 1-2% of pregnancies, so relax I would put it down to stretching and the extra blood flow round 'there'.
xx

i wish i could find comfort in those statistics but have you seen the amount of women on this forum who sadly suffer from this condition??

That's understandable, thanks for not taking what i said the wrong way x

Just wish the hospitals could scan us more often than twice, in what they class as normal pregs. I know they can't do it on a whim, but when women have genuine worries i think they should.

Hope your discomfort/pain has settled down a bit now xxx

If you have an incomp. cervix, You wouldnt know. They will not digenose you with one your first pg. you would have to have a loss or two in the second tri(before 20weeks) to then be considered of the chances. When you have an imcomp cervix, you dilate without knowing. I have had 4 preterm babies. my first preterm wasnt that preterm only 4 weeks early but i started preterm labor at 20 weeks and had to be put on meds and drips to stop them throughout that pg. With my other 3 preterm babies. they were 34weeks to 32weeks gestation. due to preterm labor and dilation. they have yet to classify me with anything since i never had a 2nd tri loss. I wouldnt worry. the pains are normal.

i had 4 normal term babies then suddenly with number 5, i silently dilated, i honestly didnt know, until my waters started leaking...... they dont routinely look at any woman for it, and i was hugely shocked as were the docs at how short my cervix was, and prob was in my last pregnancy/ies. only after a loss, will they diagnose you, and the only way to diagnose it is to hae internal scans with empty bladder, abdo scans are not accurate in determining length of cervix. So............. after saying all that, when i had my last baby i had no stabbing pains in cervix, no cervical ache or pain, and only symptom was very heavy adbomen much earlier than i would have expected, but put that down to being my 5th.............. this time i have had every stab, ache, pain etc and worried myself literally sick, and my last scan showed a 2.3cm cerv ix, with mild funneling but looked better than it did 2 weeks previously, plus i have the stitch in....you really can never tell, baby kicks down on top of your cervix and lays right above it, you wil feel pains.......in no means does that mean you have a short cervix........... now the only wy you will get taken seriously is if you say you have had huge pressure on abdomen, and lost some plug or blood or something, and they will scan you and insist on internal due to the cervical tests you had dome and say you were advised by your last consultant this would prob damage your cervix............. its not ideal, but neither is sitting at home worrying sick, or pay for a private cervical scan, £50 at scan places dotted around the country, bound to be one near you. that way you can go armed to your consultant and they will most likely put you on weekly/2 weekly internal scans and or possibility of a stitch............ so thats it really, there is a 98% chance your cervix is not short or incompetent , thats your list of choices though hun xx

I had a stitch put in at 14 weeks just in case my cervix is incompetent. I had a mmc in Feb but it was nothing to do with my cervix all seemed fine there. However I had a cone biopsy and loop diathermy in 2007. The lenght of my cervix is ok despite having had the neck chopped off but they dont know if it will work properly as the pregnancy gets heavier.

My SIS has had 3 mc and they said they will put a stitch in for her as soon as she gets to 12 weeks next time.

Hopefully your pains are normal hun xx

i had an email from the sonographer doing my scan because i was concerned about this.
she said my cervix looked normal, internal os closed, no funneling and the pregnancy looked completely normal..... i thought a short cervix or shortening of the cervix was based on the length and not whether or not your internal os is open or closed?
also whilst on the topic of os, my external os seems open and squishy at certain times of the day but in the morning feels round and closed... not sure if this means anything but i mentioned it at the scan last week and she looked at my cervix abdominally and explained that although it is not a correct way to scan the cervix all looked ok as my internal os was closed... to me, this meant nothing...i was still worrying, so im going to push for it to be looked at on thursday.
Im basing my worries on the fact that my cervix doesnt feel like it did during my first pregnancy and that sometimes the external os feels wide open, whether it is or not i have no idea since i cant see inside there.

Thanks everyone

I don't want to push for a scan or pay for one as I'm probably just paranoid! Mw said it's quite invasive on the cervix and can do more harm than good if I have no real reason.

Ellahstruts I do have a very heavy abdomen, feels like I'm carrying a water balloon! It's fine once I'm standing but to go from sitting to standing I have to go slow, no jumping up or it's like I'll leave my belly behind! Hope this doesn't mean anything bad though!

Hi, I am 26 weeks and have experienced these pains regularly, especially if the baby is having a bit of a growth spurt (I usually notice I'm a bit rounder a few days later). I think they're a normal part of pregnancy. My midwife told me to expect them and to only get them checked if the pain is bad enough to make me double over (which would have to be pretty severe). Hope that helps.
