What is baptism?

I'm Asian and married to a British guy. I'm Buddhist. I know he got baptized when he was little. I think his family will want the baby to be baptized, but my OH doesn't really bothered. I want to know the purpose of this ceremony. Does it mean you are Christian after you've done that?

According to my limited knowledge it's a christian trait where they cleanse the soul. In my old church it was believed that the soul is born a sinner and this is to cleanse them of all sins so that they may start afresh. But I see other religions practice it too.

It has become a traditional thing too. I was baptised and back then my parents weren't very religious. It seems to be more popular in England than South Africa though. Only church-going christians baptise their children here.

(I'm English, moved over to SA when I was a child )

I really think it's up to you and you partner.

To answer your other question that I missed. No being baptised doesn't make you a christian.

I hope you can come to some sort of an agreement. If you and your partner aren't bothered then you need not do it. Wait until the baby is old enough to decide for themselves maybe.
