I assume our midwives / doc/ obst (or whoever it is you see regularly) will go through this with us nearer the time?
My doc told me there is a lot of time for thigns to happen which will affect my birthing preferences - high blood pressure, big baby etc. I personally think it's a little early to plan everything yet, thought i've been thinking things through.

It's never too early to plan! I started planning mine about a year before I got pregnant!

Don't let worries about what 'might' happen stop you from making any plans, birth plans come in different parts and what might not apply in one section will in the next... for example, you plan a natural birth with baby going straight to the breast when born but you end up with a c-section. You can still have baby put straight on you and breast.

I spent a LONG time writing my birth plan and finally finished it last week.
It all depends on what you want, it's best to start with online birth plan templates and then build it up from there.
Just google a few and see which one's you like the most

I've often wondered about this.
I found out that the hospital I'll be delivering in do allow birth plans so that's a plus. Since half of them here dont.

I have, however, decided to be pretty casual about it. I'll discuss my situation with my dr and between the two of us we can work out some agreement.
I'm not going to have everything written down and colour coded and loose my temper if the hospital don't obey my wishes. I've seen too many friends have a birth plan and something has gone wrong and they've been so annoyed and stressed out because it didn't go their way. I feel it's not my choice really but the baby's. Sure there will be things I'd like done and things I wont but as long as my baby is home, safe and healthy then I'll be fine.

This is my choice today. LOL I change my mind that often we'll see how I feel closer to the time.

I'm just going to go with the flow and do whatever i am advised by the doctors/MW's. To be honest before i came on this forum i didn't even know you could make a birth plan on what you would and wouldn't like!

I do know i want to have the baby in hospital but I don't want to make plans about having or not having pain relief as i don't know what i will be able to stand, this being my first baby, obviously if the pain is absolutely unbearable i will go for the epi all the way! if i am ok i won't bother.

All i know and have decided on is that i would like just my OH to be with me and baby arrive safely.

Yes Jules that's my reason too. It's my first child. I have no idea what to expect.

My mom was in labour for 2 hrs with me. She only needed gas & air. I'd love to have the same labour but how do I know?

At first I was anti pain relief but DH told me to really consider an epi because I don't know if I'll manage. He seems to think I wont. Nice support I have hey? lol
Ok ok I'm a baby at times when it comes to pain.

Both my mother and sister had long labours, so i am just presuming mine probably will be too, i'm hoping not obviously! I think my mothers averaged around 26 hours for myself and sister, a little less for my brother. and my sisters labours were around 16 hours each.

I would like not to have the epidural as the not being able to move about and get a bath etc straight away afterwards really puts me off. My sister had it with the first and she said it was great really helped with the pain. the second she didn't and although she was in horrendous pain (and baby was 10lb4!) she preferred how she felt after the birth.

So personally i am just going to keep my mind open to what may happen.

i'm wanting a c section adn i want DB to be able to cut the cord, and I want baby to be put on my chest to breast feed as soon as possible.
But apart form that they can do what they like - just keep us all healthy. Even my option for a c section is still under discussion with the doc nearer the time.

A birth plan covers a lot of option and it's never too early.
You state how you would like to be treated during labour, delivery and post-delivery.

Some of us posted our plans/ideas here - Birth Plan
I posted mine that I wrote for giving birth to Harvey.

I had a similar one for Lily and fortunately I had done it early as she came along nearly 6 weeks early. While not everything on my plan could be followed because of the situation at least staff knew how I wanted myself and my baby to be treated.

JUles, don't think 16 hours in labour is considered long!!!!!. I would encourage everyone to do a plan, find out as much as they can about labouring and birthing positions ( help to open up cervix etc). Does not have to be all about pain relief. I'm on baby number 4 and I would say be flexible but informed.
