I had them at about 15 weeks for a kidney infection, I wasnt made to sign anything and didnt have problems taking them?

Maybe give your docs a call in the morning if you want some re-assurance x

I always get water infections and this is the antibiotic I am normally precribed. When I became pregnant though the Dr changed it and said it is not recommended during pregnancy. I believe it stops folic acid from being absorbed so can therefore cause abnormalities that way. Since you are way past that stage it may be safe for you to take. Could you give nhs direct a call and check? Xx

I think you might need to take a folic acid supplement alongside it:

http://www.inhousepharmacy.co.uk/inf...formation.html

Use During Pregnancy and Lactation

The safety of trimethoprim in human pregnancy has not been established.

At doses greatly in excess of the recommended human therapeutic dose trimethoprim has been reported to be teratogenic in rats with effects typical of a folate antagonist and preventable by administration of dietary folate. No significant medicine-related malformations have been demonstrated in rabbits but at doses approximately ten times in excess of the human therapeutic dose an increase in foetal deaths was noted.

Despite its excretion in breast milk the administration of Triprim to lactating women represents a negligible risk to the suckling infant.

I would personally call your gp tomorrow..its not suitable for use in the first trimester which you are past, however its safety during pregnancy hasnt been established...Amoxycillin is the anti biotic of choice in pregnancy but it may be that your infection is severe and would not respond to the usual dosage of amoxycillin..its probably one of those benefits outweigh the risks scenario but double check with your gp

ah..this is why they have prescribed trimthroprim....the main problem seems to be that it is a folic acid antagonist..unfortunately tetracyclines are not suitible in pregnancy so you couldnt be prescribed doxycycline which usually works well against these type of infections

just out of curiousity you say you are allergic to penicillin..cephalexin is a cephalosporin not a penicillin..although it does behave in a similiar way to penicillin
